Justin and Daniel hurried into the wagon. “Are you all right?” she asked, swallowing her nausea. “Were you hurt in any way?”
“We’re fine,” Justin said, still somewhat rattled.
“What about Mr. Kang?” Marie asked, hesitant. She swiveled her head around, staring at the open staff door. “Did you try to change his mind? Is he –”
A loud gunshot sounded inside the corridor.
Silence.
Then a second gunshot.
This time, the silence remained eerily permanent.
Marie burst into tears, leaning against her husband as he consoled her in whispery tones. When Amy sat there, frozen, Justin reached over and gripped her shoulder hard.
“The gunshots are going to attract more Runners,” he said softly. “We need to leave now.”
“Of . . . of course.” She drove the station wagon out of the gate and onto an empty road, wiping the warm tears flowing down her face as she put more distance between them and Central Creek Mall. It was a place she hoped to never see again.
