Killing Dreams Page 20

by L A Dobbs

“Yes, but as we both know, serial killers can start very young.”

“My case and your sister’s case are too old and too cold for the police to care about. But both of us seem to have a little bit of expertise in the subject. What do you say we combine forces and try to catch this guy?” Holden’s face turned serious. “If he’s still out there, he could kill again.”

Jo took a sip of beer, then turned her chair to face the room. Reese, Sam, Wyatt, and Mick were laughing at the table. Her heart clenched when she watched Sam. It should be Sam she was teaming with to catch a serial killer, not Holden Joyce.

“So what are you suggesting? The killer would be quite old now.”

“That doesn’t stop them from killing,” Holden said. “It wouldn’t take much. We’d be doing the same thing that you’ve probably already been doing. The same thing that I’ve been doing——gathering information, investigating on the side. What do you think? Are you in?”

Jo slid her thumbnail under the beer label. Investigating her sister’s case had consumed her, eaten up her whole life, and now that she was finally making a home here in White Rock she’d vowed to set it aside. But this new case had ripped the scabs off the old wounds, fueling the desire to investigate and find justice for her sister again.

“I’ll have to think about it. Maybe.”

Holden glanced toward the table. “Does Mason know about your sister?”

Jo sighed, “No.” Why hadn’t she told Sam? Looking back, it seemed she’d had a million chances, but something always came up. Was it because she’d always had an excuse not to tell him because she felt guilty about not being up front with him when she’d first come to town? Now she felt it was a huge betrayal of their friendship.

  “You going to tell him?”

“Yes. Sam and I are partners. We don’t keep secrets like that from each other.”

Holden glanced at her. “Well, you’ve kept it so far.”

“Yeah, but no more. I’m going to tell him just as soon as I find the right time.”

She’d have to tell him if she was going to start this investigation on the side with Holden. Before she’d been on her own. It had been tough getting leads, getting people to talk to her. She didn’t have access to police files or databases, but the help of an FBI agent would make things much easier. She was definitely going to take Holden Joyce up on his offer. After all, what did she have to lose?
