“Mei.”
She sat up and looked around. Someone called her name. She turned to the cell door, staring hard into the deep shadows of the hall and then the darkness beyond the windows. She stared as two glowing points of white light appeared. They grew brighter and larger, coming closer and closer. Mei smiled.
“How pretty,” she giggled. “Such beautiful lights, like fireflies, sweet fireflies. I will catch them for my Jin-woo.”
The lights continued to come closer, and then a face appeared, but not a human face, a bestial one. It continued, heading straight for her, and when she thought it would crash into the window some ten feet away from her cell door, it merely slipped through like smoke. A shiver of dread filled her as the beast kept coming, its long, sinuous body weaving back and forth, its red and gold scales flashing briefly in the darkness as they caught the light from her one lone bulb. Then the head came to her door, and what passed through the bars was not a beast but a woman. She was elegant and beautiful and majestic. Her hair wove around her in inky black waves like a mane blowing in the breeze. Her lips were bloodred and her eyes snow white. A lotus blossom marked her brow in red, just between her eyes.
“Pretty,” Mei whispered. “Are you here to take me to Jin-woo?”
“No.” Her voice was musical and ethereal, echoing in the small space.
“Are you here to set me free?”
“No.”
“Why are you here?”
“In your next life, remember this.” She leaned forward, so close. She smelled of cherry blossoms and peaches. “Never harm a Dragon’s family.”
Her lips were hot, so hot. Yet Mei couldn’t pull away. Fire filled her, heat as she’d never felt before. She opened her eyes, unaware she had closed them. The lady was farther away, not kissing her, not touching her, yet she still burned. Finally the agony registered in her brain. She screamed and screamed and screamed as the fire consumed her from the inside out until there was nothing left but ash and smoke and embers.
CHEN-BAO STARED at the remains, emotionless. It had been a long time since she last took a life in such a manner. That too was a case of someone hurting one she loved. Such an affront could not be forgiven nor forgotten. Turning, she passed through the cell bars and then through the window, shifting as she did so and winding her way into the sky. The mystery of Mei’s death would baffle the masses, but those who knew, those who had encountered Dragons before, would know she had broken the law of the Celestials:
Never harm the clan.
E.T. MALINOWSKI is the youngest of seven girls. It was her love of reading that eventually led her to attempt writing. From there, a passion was born. She began writing romance in her early teens and, at that time, never dreamed of sharing her work with anyone. With the help of several dear friends, not to mention her ex-husband, she found the courage to take that last step toward publication.
As the single mother of three rambunctious boys, finding time to write is a bit difficult. Yet E.T. manages to do it, even if it’s on break or lunch at a regular day job. She has found her place in homoerotic romance. To her, love doesn’t recognize gender boundaries and is always special.
An avid reader, E.T. finds inspiration in all her favorite genres, from mainstream romance by her favorite authors to Japanese manga and anime. To her, even the classic fairy tales hold that spark of motivation, and if there is one thing she has learned from her many years of writing solely for herself, it’s this: never deny the Muse, she gets cranky and pulls out the bullwhip.
