David tried to get his thoughts in order. His son had come to see him. This was ever so much better than a return phone call. “So you just flew to Florida?”
“I did. I figured it was time that we… talk. And we will. I’m staying for a few days, so we’ll have time.” He turned to the young woman beside him. “And I have someone I want you to meet. This is Mia. My… my fiancée.”
“Your… well, congratulations!” He felt a wide smile sweep across his face.
The woman smiled at him in return. “It’s so nice to meet you.”
He grabbed her hand. “It’s wonderful to meet you, too.” He turned to Ruby. “Ruby, this is my son, Corey, and this is his fiancée, Mia.”
Ruby smiled. “So I heard.” She took Corey’s hand and Mia’s hand in hers. “I’m so glad to meet both of you.”
Corey turned to him. “Mia has been saying that it’s time that you and I figured out a way to be a… family… because she’ll be family soon, too. Then you left that message and it just seemed like a sign that I should come find you.”
“I am so glad you did.”
“Lillian got us rooms at Charming Inn. So you two will have lots of time to talk.” Mia linked her arm in Corey’s “But tonight, how about we just enjoy this Festival of Lights? It looks wonderful. I adore all the lights.”
“That sounds like a brilliant plan.” His heart swelled with happiness. Life didn’t get much better than this.
Ruby stood on tiptoe and whispered in his ear. “Best. Day. Ever.”
Chapter 27
Exactly one month later, Ruby stood in The Nest. Lillian cocked her head to one side eyeing Ruby. Her friend looked beautiful. “I told you this dress would look wonderful on you. It’s a perfect wedding dress.” Lillian spun Ruby around, so happy for her friend.
“I can’t thank you enough for letting us have our wedding here at Charming Inn. It was such short notice.”
“Of course. I’m glad it worked out.”
“David and I decided that life is short. We didn’t want to wait any longer to get married. There are no guarantees in life, and we wanted to spend our days and nights together.”
“I can see how happy he makes you. You’re so good for each other.”
“He does make me happy.” Ruby looked down at Mischief who was sporting a bowtie on his collar and May with a pretty pink bow. “You two about ready?”
Both dogs wagged their tails in answer.
“I have a present for you.” Lillian walked over to the table and picked up a box wrapped in white paper.
“Oh, thank you.” Ruby took the box and carefully unwrapped it. “Oh, Lillian, it’s beautiful.” She took the lacy cream-colored wrap from the box.
“I thought it would go well with your dress, and it might get a bit chilly after the sun goes down.”
“It’s perfect. Just perfect. I love it. Thank you.” Ruby draped the wrap around her shoulders, smiling.
“Oh, there’s the door.” She took one last look at Ruby and went to answer the knock. Ben stepped inside. He stood for a moment in silence, staring at his mother, then his face broke into a wide smile. “Oh, Mom, you look beautiful.”
Ruby walked over to him, her face beaming, and kissed his cheek. “Thank you.”
Lillian was so grateful that Ben and David had worked things out. Ben seemed genuinely happy now that Ruby was marrying David.
Lillian handed her friend the simple bouquet of white flowers and kissed her cheek. “I’ve got the pups. You go marry that man.”
“You ready?” Ben asked.
“I am. Very ready.” That was more than evident by the smile on her face and the sparkle in her eyes.
“Then let’s go walk you down the aisle.” Ben took his mother’s arm.
“Dad, quit fidgeting. Let me get your tie fixed.” Corey laughed and reached to adjust the tie again.
David smiled. “Can’t help it. I’m ready for this wedding to happen and Ruby to become my wife. I’m a lucky man.”
Corey nodded. “You are.”
David had gotten to know his son and Mia better while they’d stayed on the island for a bit after they’d first surprised him with their visit and was really glad to have them back again for his wedding.
He’d gone from feeling like he had no family to feeling like his life was full of family and friends now. His son and Mia. And now Ruby, Ben, and Charlotte.
“Okay, you look great. Ready to go?” Corey asked.
“I’m so ready.”
They headed outside and took their places by the arbor on the sand. The weather had cooperated nicely with a warm day, and it looked like Ruby would get her beautiful sunset in perfect harmony with their wedding vows, just like she’d wanted.
Music started and he turned to look down the aisle. Ruby stepped into view on Ben’s arm and she took his breath away in her simple cream dress and lacy wrap around her shoulders. That, and the look in her eyes. He could get lost in that look. Love, anticipation, and happiness. All the same feelings he was having.
Ben walked her down the aisle and kissed his mom. He could hear Ben’s words clearly. “Love you. All the happiness in the world, Mom.”
David reached out his hand and Ruby took it and went to stand by his side, her heart bursting with happiness. He held her hand firmly until they released hands to slip on their wedding rings. Then he took her hand back in his, holding firmly, connecting them.
They said their simple vows, and he smiled at her when the minister said he could kiss her. He kissed her gently, then laughed and swept her off her feet, swinging her around in a circle.
“I love this woman.” He shouted his words to the sky.
Mischief and May barked in agreement. Everyone laughed and the sky decided to pick just that very moment to burst into brilliant shades of pink and orange. She’d gotten her perfect sunset.
He leaned close to her. “You know that wish I made at Lighthouse Point?”
“Yes?”
“Well, I got more than I wished for. A lot more.”
She stood on tiptoe and whispered in his ear. “Best. Day. Ever.”
