“Okay, whoever said boys were rowdier than girls was a damn liar,” Aidan said quietly, so the kids wouldn’t hear. “Those three are gonna grow up and be Charlie’s Angels or some shit.”

“And just think: you offered to bring Camille along.”

“Yeah, don’t let me make that mistake again.”

Tango chuckled. “Ava totally knew that was a bad idea.”

Aidan frowned. “It sucks that she really is smarter than me.”

Tango tried to turn his next laugh into a cough, but Aidan shot him a dirty look anyway. “Hey, you said it, man, don’t look at me.”

Tango heard the clip of heels against concrete and knew without looking, before he even heard their voices, that Sam and Whitney had joined them. He turned to see them coming down the sidewalk toward them, jackets zipped against the autumn chill, both talking animatedly about, probably, their latest project. Somehow, the three creative types in the family had teamed up and were currently working on a series of graphic novels for teens, Sam and Ava writing, Whitney illustrating.

Tango and Aidan secretly hoped their mechanic paychecks were about to become irrelevant.

As they neared, Whitney glanced up, caught his eye, and grinned so wide it looked like it made her face hurt.

His chest seized, a happy little heart attack, emotion moving like good whiskey through his veins.

The kids spotted their mothers with shouts of “Mom!” “Mommy!” “Mama!” and stampeded toward them, even Jake, flinging sand as he went.

Tango tipped his head back against the bench, staring up at the denim-colored evening sky. This was the most dangerous, the most wonderful, the most daring addiction of all: life.
