Wade didn’t look around as he bent down and placed his mouth across Annie’s leg. He knew this was an old-fashioned method in removing the venom, but he didn’t have a first-aid kit with the proper snake bite tools. There was a chance the poison could harm him once it reached his mouth, but he didn’t care. His only thought was helping Annie.
When he heard the sound of horse hooves behind him, he lifted Annie into his arms and turned to wait for Bill. Wade handed Annie to Bill and mounted Blackie. Once in the saddle, Bill lifted Annie to him.
They set off with a gallop heading for the main highway some distance away. Wade pushed Blackie hard while cradling Annie close against his chest. As he took a quick glance at her, she closed her eyes and her breathing sounded shallow. A frightened feeling swept through Wade at the thought he might not make it in time to save her. The realization hit him that she meant everything to him—and he didn’t want to lose her.
Eventually they reached the main highway and Wade craned his neck to see above the hilly landscape. Off in the distance a tractor-trailer headed toward them. Wade dismounted and handed Annie to Bill. He walked to the edge of the roadway and started waving his hands in the air. The trucker noticed and slowed.
“Bill, head back to camp. When Hank gets there with the trucks, load the cattle and I’ll meet you later at the ranch.”
“Will do, boss,” he handed a lifeless Annie back to Wade.
The truck driver jumped out of the truck and Wade explained what he needed. They loaded Annie into the sleeping compartment and headed down the highway. Wade sat alongside Annie and kept checking her temperature by touching her forehead. She felt warm and this worried him.
The truck driver started making calls on his CB radio and cell phone. It wasn’t long before a siren sounded behind them. The trucker braked and stopped. He waited almost impatiently for the sheriff to walk alongside the truck. “We’ve got a gal snake bit in the sleeper compartment,” his gravelly voice filled the cabin.
The sheriff nodded, “Pass her to me and I’ll put her in my car. We should make faster time than you would in this big rig.”
After situating Annie in the police car, Wade climbed in and placed her head to rest in his lap. They set off with lights flashing and the wail of the siren filling the open spaces.
When they reached the hospital, the emergency crew whisked Annie away. Wade couldn’t do anything but wait for news of how she was doing. He paced the floor and every little noise brought his head up with a start. A nurse walked toward him and he met her halfway.
“Do you have any word about Annie’s condition?” The words poured out of his mouth quickly in his agitated state.
“She’ll have to stay tonight, but you got her here in time,” she explained. “Once she’s released from the hospital, she’ll need bed rest for a few days.”
“I’ll see to it,” he answered, relief filling him at the news. Wade already knew he was taking Annie to his ranch to recuperate. “When can I see her?”
The nurse turned and pointed, “She’s in 120 at the end of the hall.”
“Thanks.” He didn’t stop to talk any longer as he hurried along the busy hallway until coming to her room.
As he entered, he couldn’t believe how fragile she looked with her dark hair splayed out across the white pillowcase. Her skin looked pale compared to the pink tint he’d become so used to. Wade felt a protectiveness fill him, seeing how vulnerable she looked.
Annie heard his movements. Her violet eyes opened and a smile tugged the corner of her full lips.
Wade bent and captured her mouth beneath his in a kiss filled with a torrent of emotions. Relief flooded through him that she was all right, but another emotion of terror lay below the surface, that he’d almost lost her when he’d just found her.
“Annie, I’m so glad we made it in time,” his ragged tone filled the quiet room.
She touched his hand softly and he carried it to his mouth to kiss. “Thank you for saving me. The nurse told me I’d need to rest for a few days. Since my family’s back east, I’ll have to find a place to stay and—”
“I’m taking you home—with me—to my ranch,” Wade stopped, wanting to make sure she was agreeable. “Will you go with me and spend a little time recuperating? I have plenty of room.”
“I accept,” she murmured tiredly, her eyelids beginning to close. “Before I go to sleep, will you make travel arrangements for Misty? She wants to go visit her family.”
“I’ll take care of it.” Wade tightened his grip on her hand.
“I don’t know what I’d do without you.”
His breath stopped for a moment, listening to her statement. “The nurse said you could leave tomorrow, so we’ll take off for my place in the morning.”
“I hope you’re ready to take up where we left off at the lake.”
“I’m looking forward to it.” Wade leaned to her and kissed her eyelids before capturing her mouth gently beneath his. He couldn’t wait to take Annie to his ranch and find out if she felt something for him, or if it was just a sexual thing. If it was only sexual, he was ready to work on making it something more permanent.
Wade pulled a chair next to the bed and sat holding Annie’s hand. For some reason, he never wanted to let her go and hunkered down in the chair to wait out the night with her.
Sometime soon, he’d find a way to convince her she needed him as much as he needed her. With these thoughts in mind, he fell into a restful sleep still clutching her small hand in his.
