by O'Brien, John

The beauty on the high plains below and the surrounding mountains need nothing except appreciation. The only blot is one unseen: the knowledge that miles to the east, the land is a radioactive desert and will be so for many generations to come.

For the first years following the end of the infected, helicopters flew in periodically, bringing supplies and visitors. Those ceased years ago, making the two ponder the fate of those on the western shores.

“Do you regret not leaving and raising a family of your own?” the older man asks.

“No, you silly old man. I have no regrets. In case you haven’t figured it out yet, you’re my family,” Clarke answers.

“And you’re mine, lass,” Brown states.

With peace in their hearts, the two time-tested survivors lean back and gaze on the tall grasses rippling in the breezes far below.
