‘We’re all very sundry here,’ said Roy, who was on his third glass of wine.
‘Don’t be silly, Roy,’ said Aunt Drusilla, who had barely touched her first.
‘… and aiming to get the people who’d like to help me spend it off my back, Bill has proposed and I have agreed that most of the money goes into a trust fund. Kate here will see that the money is invested wisely and check the feasibility of the applications made to the trust. Gilbert will advise on all moral issues …’
She smiled and raised her glass to Gilbert who had whole-heartedly commended her decision about the church hall.
‘… and then there’s me.’
Gilbert crammed a sandwich into his mouth and said, ‘Kate’s the head, and Ellie’s the heart, so what am I?’
‘The stomach, dear,’ said his devoted wife Liz.
‘Great idea,’ said Roy, though he looked disappointed. He would have liked to be a trustee, too. As would Diana. Stewart smiled and lifted his glass to Ellie, but Diana put her glass down and turned away. In a minute she would make an excuse to leave.
Tod pulled at Ellie’s arm. ‘Midge wants to come in.’
‘He can’t, dear. Not with all this food around. He’ll have to wait.’
‘Three cheers for Ellie!’ Roy raised his glass, and everyone else responded.
Tod screamed, ‘Look at Midge!’
Foiled from entering through the cat flap, Midge had retreated some way down the garden, turned round and was galloping towards the door at speed. With a bound, he reached the door handle and pulled it down under his weight. Momentum carried him into the conservatory. He dropped off the handle, leaving the door open, and made a beeline for the buffet.
‘Oh, Midge,’ said Ellie. ‘Whatever am I going to do with you?’
