Twisted War Page 27

On the way back home I got a call from Emmanuel demanding to know how the photo shoot went and when he’d have pictures. “Soon, Jesus,” I groaned. He was still controlling as ever and since I was pregnant again he was even worse.

As soon as I found out I was pregnant, he made Alexander schedule me a paternity test before the baby ever came out. Alexander didn’t fight him because he wanted to know himself. Turns out Alexander got me knocked up the same day Uncle Rashad met his fate.

Xavier actually seemed relieved. Asshole. It’s not like he ever stopped trying to fuck me so I don’t know why he always acted like I was the devil and he’d be infected with evil if he were around me for too long. Even at six months pregnant he still tried his hand and I slapped the shit out of that hand every time it came near me. The only person I wanted touching me was my fiancé.

When I tried to tell Emmanuel that Alexander had proposed he wouldn’t hear it. He busied himself with everything he could find but he would not listen to me tell him I was engaged. He hated looking at the ring on my finger and I knew he’d never come to the wedding.

“You remember what I told you before you had Chloe?” He’d asked me. I nodded my head tearfully.

“That I could get married and have kids and…”

“And you’d always be mine.” Our eyes met and he got close enough to kiss me, but something made him pull back. I was glad because I wasn’t strong enough to push him away.

No matter how I tried to shake it, Emmanuel was still tucked away in my heart. I think we all knew it too. I just made it my duty to not get too close to him. Even round and pregnant, I couldn’t get too close. Alexander was understanding but he’d never understand if I ended up in Emmanuel’s bed for any reason. As happy as Alexander made me, I couldn’t ever do that to him.

“Can we stop and get a burger?” Laurel whined from the backseat.

“Oh god can someone get her ass some food before I hit her?” I groaned.

“This isn’t my second baby Camilla. Leave me alone. So what you’re a pro at being pregnant. Let me whine.” Alexander squeezed my hand signaling for me to calm down. I rolled my eyes at it all as he pulled into Burger King for the pregnant princess. After she ordered half the damn menu we went back to my house and Alexander and Dad hung out while Laurel, Chloe and I relaxed and watched cartoons.

My phone chimed and I looked to see a message from Cole.

Cole: Hey Camilla can you get me some info? Might have just gotten myself into dangerous territory.

Me: Jesus Cole. Aren’t you supposed to be staying out of trouble?

Cole: I know. I can’t go to granddad though. Help me out please?

Me: Okay Cole. But just so you know, I’m not getting my pregnant ass into any drama.

Cole: I can’t make you any promises but thank you.

Well, it’s always something, right? At least my life wasn’t the one that was twisted anymore. That’s all I could ask for.

Be sure to read Dangerous Territory, a companion novel to Twisted War, next. Get to know Cole and figure out what kind of danger he’s gotten himself into.
