Delilah and Ethan Page 12

by Annie Boone

Swallowing hard, Cynthia tried to push away the guilt that was plaguing her as she reached for a stale piece of bread and a slice of meat. “Fine,” Cynthia managed to reply as she folded the bread into a sandwich around the ham, “Everything’s been just fine.” Thinking better of her statement she added, “Other than the obvious, of course.”

Leaning his elbows on the table, Andy looked her straight in the face as he asked, “Are you still looking for something? Like maybe… I don’t know… a job?”

Sitting up straighter, Cynthia felt her green eyes get big as a surge of hope filled her heart. Could it be that Andy knew of something? Or was he simply trying to trick her?

“Yes, of course,” she returned, stammering with excitement as she spoke, “Oh, yes, I’m certainly still looking for work. Do you happen to know of something?”

Grabbing a fork, Andy heaped a generous pile of ham onto his plate as he smiled softly. Cynthia noticed that her sister was also looking slightly more pleasant at the prospect of a potential job.

“I do,” Andy returned. “I think I might have found something for you.” As he paused for a moment, Cynthia wondered if she could contain her excitement. She wanted to jump to her feet and demand that he tell her where the job was, but instead she just leaned forward, ready to soak up every word he said.

“Have you had a chance to meet our sherriff?” Andy asked as he spread some butter on his plate beside his slices of bread, “Tyler Shelton?”

Searching her mind and coming up blank, Cynthia shook her head slowly, “I don’t think so. Why? Does he need a new deputy?” She suggested jokingly.

Andy’s face broke out in a wide grin and he shook his head, “No, and certainly not you for deputy if he did.” Sobering somewhat, Andy explained further. “His wife, Rose, passed away the summer that Diana and I got married…”

“A sweet woman,” interrupted Diana, her own face clouding over with sorrow at the memory of the young lady, “She got sick so fast and… well, things certainly did not happen as we had all been hoping and praying.”

Swallowing a bite of his supper, Andy hurried forward to explain, “Rose and the sheriff had two children. Cute kids, but they need a woman’s hand in a desperate sort of way. Tyler’s mother had been helping out some lately, but she’s been called back home to the east. Now, he’s going crazy to find someone who can stay with them and watch over them while he works. They need someone to help out, you see.” Looking at Cynthia with a serious expression on his face, Andy asked a question that seemed almost more like a statement, “You like children, don’t you?”

Did she like children? To be honest, Cynthia had never liked them very much. Children were fine, she supposed, but in their own place. Although she was almost desperate enough to do anything for work, the idea of becoming a nanny filled her with uncertainty.

Glancing from her brother-in-law to her sister, Cynthia could see that they were both expectant and hopeful. She had been living with them long enough and it was time for her to move out on her own.

“Of course, I like children,” Cynthia lied. “Who doesn’t?”

Andy nodded his head, his smile growing even bigger, and Cynthia was almost certain that she could see her sister let out a sigh of relief.

“I have to go to town in the morning,” Andy announced as he reached for his glass of sweet tea, “So I can let you ride along on the buggy and go talk to the sheriff at his office. There are so few women out here and most of the ones who are here are married with families of their own. I can almost guarantee that you’ll get the job since there really isn’t anyone else.”

Like it or not, it appeared that the matter was settled. Cynthia Kent would be taking on the position as nanny for the sheriff’s two children. She could only hope that she was up to the task!
