Overhead she heard the sound of a helicopter and from there the chaos got worse. The men that were left were scrambling around looking for an escape. They could find none. A wolf barred their way and the invisible man was taking them down one by one. There was a clearing close to her house she knew, and when she saw men dressed in black pouring through the tree line and surrounding her attackers, it was over. The unconscious or injured were rounded up while anyone else knew they were outmanned and dropped their guns without hesitation. She saw Wolfe moving toward the back door cautiously, and she ran to open it. An invisible figure bumped into her in his haste to get in and then Wolfe trotted in after. Vicki closed the door quickly not wanting anyone else to rush in. These men needed to protect their secret. Even if the black ops people outside knew who they were, they didn’t know the surreptitious information these men kept from the world.
Wolfe shifted back and hastily got dressed. “If they ask, we were pinned down in here,” he said to Vicki who nodded.
Connor came out of the bathroom and picked up the gun that he left when he went outside. Wolfe moved the barrier from the front door and together the three of them left the cabin. This was the first time Vicki was able to leave her home in days, and she was flooded with relief. Connor walked over to speak to the men in black and let them know where the camp was. Vicki saw them up close. Even their faces had black paint on them. These were men who did not want anyone to recognize them.
“Go with them, Connor. Make sure anything that references Maynard is brought back here to me, even the damn radio frequency if necessary,” Wolfe ordered. “He is not getting away with lack of information.”
“Got it, boss,” Conner replied and set off through the trees with four of the black ops men.
Wolfe crouched low in front of the group of prisoners. “As for you guys, you’re each going to give a statement in detail about why you were sent out here and by whom.”
One man spat on the ground and gave Wolfe a disdainful look. “I’d rather go to prison, we all would.”
The laugh that came from Wolfe was purely devilish, and Vicki could see he was a formidable opponent regardless of man or beast.
“You think I’ll actually take you to prison? Look around, boys. This is so under the radar that I could lose you in the woods and no one would know, nor would any of these men say anything.” Wolfe’s eyes narrowed to dangerous slits. “But I will tell you this—for terrorizing her all these days, I will drop you someplace really special and let the wolf you saw come back and eat every last one of you sons of bitches.”
No one had to ask if he was serious. Vicki wasn’t in any danger, but even she could tell that Wolfe was not playing games. The man swallowed, and the look of fear on his face was evident. He nodded and the rest followed suit. It took a few hours for them to be loaded up and flown out to be formally arrested. Wolfe was on the telephone and from his conversation she could tell that senator Maynard was also in custody. It was finally over, and she wanted to cry at the sheer joy of being alive. The last set of men were finally ready to leave, and Connor with his boxes ofd evidence was ready to go with them.
“So I guess there will be two empty spaces in the chopper?” Connor said with a grin.
“We’ll head back way before Maynard gets arraigned,” Wolfe said.
“Nice working with you, boss. We’ll have to do it again sometime.” Connor shook Wolfe’s hand then kissed Vicki on the cheek. “Thanks for the food, sweets.”
Vicki grinned and hugged Connor tight. “That’s for being one of my heroes.”
“All in a day’s work.” He gave his mock salute again and headed out with the men. Soon the chopper blades could be heard, and they watched the metal bird take off and head away from her home.
“I thought you might leave with them,” she said as she turned to Wolfe.
He immediately embraced her and held her tight. “Now why would you think that?”
“You know you only came across me when you were answering the call of the wild and the intense situation, you know blah, blah, blah.”
He kissed her chin and then took her lips in a kiss that melted her from the inside out.
“I look at it this way. I think you’re going to need some help cleaning up our home starting with a bigger bathroom.” Wolfe smiled down at her.
“I thought you were kidding about that.” Vicki smiled hesitantly. “We were in the middle of … you know so I wouldn’t hold you to anything you said.”
“I never say anything I don’t mean, Victoria,” Wolfe said solemnly, and his eyes held all the emotions. “This lone wolf has found his home if you’ll have me.”
She held him tight and kissed him in response. This sanctuary that she built had never felt safer or more secure. The wolf who rescued her on the steps of Capital Hill and now once again, held her heart and made it his home.
The End
