  ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS

Continued thanks to Wayne Brookes, Camilla Elworthy, Jeremy Trevathan and all the team at Pan Macmillan who publish my books and seem to think they make sense! Also to my agent Gordon Wise for keeping me on the straight and narrow, and to Michael McCoy for handling all my other writing.

A few fabulous people bid considerable amounts of money for some of my favourite charities to have characters named after them in this book, so thank you to Karen Paterson for bidding money for Moodswings Network. Moodswings is a Manchester-based charity that gives information, advice and ongoing support to people with mood disorders and other forms of emotional distress. Also thank you to Jem Pammenter-Fry and Mark Reynolds, who bid money for The Food Chain. The Food Chain is a London-based charity that aims to ensure that people living with HIV can access the nutrition they need to get well, stay well and lead healthy, independent lives.

This is a story about friendship, so thank you to all the friends I’ve had along the way. Some have hung around longer than others, but none are ever forgotten. And to my mates on Alderson Road in my teenage years, hopefully none of us has ended up like the characters in this book!

And finally, thank you to my partner Paul Hunt for keeping the faith and egging me on whenever I thought I couldn’t finish this book.
