ALL humane things are subject to decay,
And, when Fate summons, Monarchs must obey:
This Fleckno found, who, like Augustus, young
Was call’d to Empire and had govern’d long:
In Prose and Verse was own’d, without dispute 5
Through all the realms of Non-sense, absolute.
This aged Prince now flourishing in Peace,
And blest with issue of a large increase,
Worn out with business, did at length debate
To settle the Succession of the State; 10
And pond’ring which of all his Sons was fit
To Reign, and wage immortal War with Wit,
Cry’d, ’tis resolv’d; for Nature pleads that He
Should onely rule, who most resembles me:

Mature in dullness from his tender years;

The rest to some faint meaning make pretence,

Heywood and Shirley were but Types of thee,

My warbling Lute, the Lute I whilom strung, 35

About thy boat the little Fishes throng,

All Arguments, but most his Plays, perswade
That for anointed dulness he was made

A watch Tower once, but now, so Fate ordains,

Great Fletcher never treads in Buskins here,

But gentle Simkin just reception finds
Amidst this Monument of vanisht minds;
Pure Clinches, the suburbian Muse affords;
And Panton waging harmless war with words.

For ancient Decker prophesi’d long since,
That in this Pile should Reign a mighty Prince,
Born for a scourge of Wit, and flayle of Sense,
To whom true dulness should some Psyches owe, 90
But Worlds of Misers from his pen should flow;
Humorists and Hypocrites it should produce,
Whole Raymond Families and Tribes of Bruce.
Now Empress Fame had publisht the renown
Of Sh — — ‘s Coronation through the Town. 95
Rows’d by report of Fame, the Nations meet,
From near Bun-Hill and distant Watling-street.
No Persian Carpets spread th’ imperial way,
But scatter’d Limbs of mangled Poets lay;
From dusty shops neglected Authors come, 100
Martyrs of Pies and Reliques of the Bum.
Much Heywood, Shirley, Ogleby there lay,
But loads of Sh —— almost choakt the way.
Bilk’t Stationers for Yeomen stood prepar’d
And H —— was Captain of the Guard. 105
The hoary Prince in Majesty appear’d,
High on a Throne of his own Labours rear’d.
At his right hand our young Ascanius sat
Rome’s other hope and Pillar of the State.
His Brows thick fogs, instead of glories, grace, 110
And lambent dullness plaid around his face.
As Hannibal did to the Altars come,
Swore by his Syre a mortal Foe to Rome;
So Sh —— swore, nor should his Vow bee vain,
That he till Death true dullness would maintain; 115
And, in his father’s Right, and Realms defence,
Ne’er to have Peace with Wit, nor truce with Sense.
The King himself the sacred Unction made,
As King by Office, and as Priest by Trade:
In his sinister hand, instead of Ball, 120
He placed a mighty Mug of potent Ale;
Love’s Kingdom to his right he did convey,
At once his Sceptre and his rule of Sway;
Whose righteous Lore the Prince had practis’d young
And from whose Loyns recorded Psyche sprung. 125
His temples, last, with Poppies were o’erspread,
That nodding seem’d to consecrate his head:
Just at that point of time, if Fame not lye,
On his left hand twelve reverend Owls did fly.
So Romulus, ’tis sung, by Tyber’s Brook, 130
Presage of Sway from twice six Vultures took.
Th’ admiring throng loud acclamations make
And Omens of his future Empire take.
The Syre then shook the honours of his head,
And from his brows damps of oblivion shed 135
Full on the filial dullness: long he stood,
Repelling from his Breast the raging God;

Thou art my blood, where Johnson has no part: 175
What share have we in Nature or in Art?
Where did his wit on learning fix a brand
And rail at Arts he did not understand?
Where made he love in Prince Nicander’s vein,
Or swept the dust in Psyche’s humble strain? 180
Where sold he Bargains, Whip-stich, kiss my Arse.
Promis’d a Play and dwindled to a Farce?
When did his Muse from Fletcher scenes purloin,
As thou whole Eth’ridg dost transfuse to thine?
But so transfused as Oyls on waters flow, 185
His always floats above, thine sinks below.
This is thy Province, this thy wondrous way,
New Humours to invent for each new Play:
This is that boasted Byas of thy mind,
By which one way, to dullness, ’tis inclined, 190
Which makes thy writings lean on one side still,
And, in all changes, that way bends thy will.
Nor let thy mountain belly make pretence
Of likeness; thine’s a tympany of sense.
A Tun of Man in thy large Bulk is writ, 195
But sure thou ‘rt but a Kilderkin of wit.
Like mine thy gentle numbers feebly creep;
Thy Tragick Muse gives smiles, thy Comick sleep.
With whate’er gall thou settst thy self to write,
Thy inoffensive Satyrs never bite. 200

The Mantle fell to the young Prophet’s part
With double portion of his Father’s Art.
ABSALOM AND ACHITOPHEL
This political satire exists in two parts, with the first part of 1681 undoubtedly by Dryden, whilst the second part of 1682 written by another hand, most likely Nahum Tate, except for a few passages, including attacks on Thomas Shadwell and Elkanah Settle, by Dryden himself. The poem is an allegory employing the story of the rebellion of Absalom against King David as the basis for discussion of the background to the Monmouth Rebellion (1685), the Popish Plot (1678) and the Exclusion Crisis.
In 1681 in England, Charles II was in advanced years. He had had a number of mistresses and produced a number of illegitimate children. One of these was James Scott, the Duke of Monmouth, who was very popular, both for his personal charisma and his fervour for the Protestant cause. Charles had no legitimate heirs and his brother, the future James II of England was openly a Roman Catholic. When Charles’ health suffered, there was a panic in the House of Commons over the potential for the nation being ruled by a Roman Catholic king. The Earl of Shaftesbury had sponsored and advocated the Exclusion Bill, which would prevent James II from succeeding to the throne, but this bill was blocked by the House of Lords on two occasions. In the Spring of 1681, at the Oxford Parliament, Shaftesbury appealed to Charles II to legitimise Monmouth. Then Monmouth was caught preparing to rebel and seek the throne and Shaftesbury was suspected of fostering this rebellion. At this time the following poem was written, possibly at Charles’s behest, and published in early November 1681. Dryden’s poem tells the story of the first provocation by depicting Monmouth as Absalom, the beloved boy, Charles as David and Shaftesbury as Achitophel. The poem places most of the blame for the rebellion on Shaftesbury and portrays Charles as a reluctant and loving man who has to be king before father.
On November 24, 1681, Shaftesbury was seized and charged with high treason. A trial before a jury picked by Whig sheriffs acquitted him. Later, after the death of his father and unwilling to see his uncle James II become King, the Duke of Monmouth executed his plans and went into full revolt. The Monmouth Rebellion was put down and in 1685 the Duke was executed.

TO THE READER.
’Tis not my intention to make an Apology for my Poem: Some will think it needs no Excuse, and others will receive none. The Design, I am sure, is honest: but he who draws his Pen for one Party must expect to make Enemies of the other. For Wit and Fool are Consequents of Whig and Tory: and every man is a Knave or an Ass to the contrary side. There’s a Treasury of Merits in the Phanatick Church as well as in the Papist, and a Pennyworth to be had of Saintship, Honesty, and Poetry, for the Leud, the Factious, and the Blockheads: But the longest Chapter in Deuteronomy has not Curses enough for an Anti-Bromingham. My Comfort is, their manifest Prejudice to my Cause, will render their Judgment of less Authority against me. Yet if a Poem have a Genius, it will force its own reception in the World. For there’s a sweetness in good Verse, which Tickles even while it Hurts: And, no man can be heartily angry with him, who pleases him against his will. The Commendation of Adversaries, is the greatest Triumph of a Writer; because it never comes unless Extorted. But I can be satisfied on more easy terms: If I happen to please the more Moderate sort, I shall be sure of an honest Party; and, in all probability, of the best Judges; for the least Concern’d
are commonly the least Corrupt: And, I confess, I have laid in for those, by rebating the Satyre (where Justice would allow it), from carrying too sharp an Edge. They, who can Criticize so weakly, as to imagine I have done my Worst, may be Convinc’d at their own Cost that I can write Severely, with more ease, than I can Gently. I have but laugh’d at some mens Follies, when I coud have declaim’d against their Vices; and, other mens Vertues I have commended as freely as I have tax’d their Crimes. And now, if you are a Malicious Reader, I expect you should return upon me that I affect to be thought more Impartial than I am. But if men are not to be judg’d by their Professions, God forgive you Common-wealthsmen, for professing so plausibly for the Government. You cannot be so Unconscionable, as to charge me for not Subscribing of my Name; for that woud reflect too grosly upon your own Party, who never dare, though they have the advantage of a Jury to secure them. If you like not my Poem, the fault may possibly be in my Writing: (though ’tis hard for an Author to judge against himself;) But, more probably, ’tis in your Morals, which cannot bear the truth of it. The Violent on both sides will condemn the Character of Absalom, as either too favourably or too hardly drawn. But they are not the Violent whom I desire to please. The fault, on the right hand, is to Extenuate, Palliate, and Indulge; and, to confess freely, I have endeavoured to commit it. Besides the respect which I owe his Birth, I have a greater for his Heroick Vertues; and, David himself, coud not be more tender of the Young-man’s Life, than I woud be of his Reputation. But, since the most excellent Natures are always the most easy and, as being such, are the soonest perverted by ill Counsels, especially when baited with Fame and Glory, ’tis no more a wonder that he withstood not the temptations of Achitophel, than it was for Adam not to have resisted the two Devils, the Serpent and the Woman. The conclusion of the Story, I purposely forbore to prosecute; because, I could not obtain from my self to show Absalom Unfortunate. The Frame of it was cut out but for a Picture to the Waste; and if the Draught be so far true, ’tis as much as I design’d.
