Suddenly, to my surprise, the door opens. Gloria is standing there, in her pajamas, backlit by a lamp. Her face is scrubbed clean and her curly hair is pulled back into a messy ponytail. I don’t think I’ve ever seen anything prettier in my life.
“Jamie?”
“Yeah, it’s me. I thought you were camping?”
She shook her head. “You couldn’t go, so. . .”
“I just figured you went without me. Or with somebody else.”
“Who’s that?” a voice calls from inside the house.
Gloria replies, “Give me a minute, okay?” She steps out onto the porch and closes the door softly behind her. I take a step back, saying, “I’m sorry. I didn’t know you had company. I didn’t mean to interrupt. . .”
“It’s my sister,” she says. “She’s staying with me for a few days.”
“Oh.”
Gloria gestures to the note in my hand. “Is that for me?”
“Yeah, but. . .”
“Can I have it?”
“I feel silly.”
“Why?” she asks, taking it out of my hand.
I shrug. “Words aren’t exactly my strong suit.”
She sits on the porch steps, opens the note, and reads it. When she looks up at me, she’s smiling. “You really feel that way?”
I nod.
“My mere presence really makes your heart feel like mush and your thighs melt like butter?”
I smile sheepishly. “It sounded better in my head.”
She laughs and pats the step beside her. I sit.
“So. . .” I begin.
“So. . .” she says.
Then she leans in and kisses me. . . and the night is perfect.
Absolutely perfect.
