Matthias recovered from his realization and continued.
“On the day of my finals win…” he turned to Silly to verify his story. “Was it on the day of the finals you found out?”
“Three days. It was three days before. But I knew I had to wrap your foot or you’d have problems.”
“Do you see why I love her?” He asked and the crowd erupted. “She found out three days before game seven she was pregnant and was then convinced that she single handedly would destroy my career if she stayed with me. She made sure my foot was wrapped so I’d have no problems in the game. Then left.”
“In the fourth quarter. I had to see you play one more time.”
“Now little did Silly—I call her Silly—know that I had planned something for her and I wanted to do this after I won.” Matthias breathed in deep and dropped to one knee. Sharee came out behind him and took the mic so he could hold Silly’s hand. “Sylvia Kinder, you’ve changed me in ways I could never explain. You are my world and without you I can’t breathe. Would you please do me the honor of being my wingman forever?”
Matthias pulled out the black velvet box with the custom designed ring with a diamond surrounded by intertwining platinum bands. Tears ran down Silly’s crimson cheeks.
Lightly a song started to play. I Wanna Be Your Man, by Roger. Matthias looked up at Sharee who winked at him.
“I think she’s still afraid that you’ll not like me marrying her. Wolves fans do you have a problem with me marrying this woman.”
“No!” A loud resounding reply echoed through the stadium and Silly nodded her head yes.
He slipped the ring on her third finger and stood up. Taking her face in his hands he kissed her for every moment they’d had apart. As his tongue swept through her mouth she nipped at it then glided hers next to his. Her arms wrapped around his neck as he started to release her face so he could finally touch her belly.
“My baby.” He smiled at her.
“Your son. I’m afraid he may be a soccer player though.”
“My son,” he yelled into the mic and the crowd erupted again. The lights had come back on and he saw Cory and a few of the other players clapping and nodding in the tunnel.
“She’s still mine for the season,” he yelled.
“You sure you want to steal what’s mine?” Matthias joked holding tight to Silly’s body. Her firm belly warmed him more than he’d ever thought it could. This love thing was really getting in the way. But then again, like all the sacrifices he’d made for basketball over the years, it was worth it.
“Never mind, I’d rather limp.”
“He’d be a good wingman.” Sylvia advised. “Unless you’re still searching outer Siberia for a player will only understand when you bark myach at him.”
“Brushing up on your Russian I see.”
“Eh, I was bored, and the Emperors aren’t the only team with Euro-league tapes.” Sylvia smiled. “But Cory’s a free agent after the All-Star break.”
“You sure?”
“I’d never steer you wrong.”
Epilogue
“How is it having Matthias’ ex-wife as such an intimate part of his entourage?” Morgan, the reporter from Person magazine, smiled sweetly as a camera flashed behind Sylvia.
“Sharee was instrumental in Matthias’ success. There’s no way I would ever ask her to step aside. She’s one of his best friends and an amazing woman.”
“His former PR rep…what happened to Simone Harris? We heard that she took something very important to Matthias and was dismissed. Is that true?”
“We don’t discuss Simone. She crossed many lines and had an agenda that was not in the best interest of Matthias.”
“Matthias just signed a five-year hundred million dollar contract with the Emperors, making him the fourth highest paid player in the league. How excited are you to be staying in Kansas City where you met?”
“I know Matthias has always loved the Sharp’s and the whole Emperors’ organization. Kansas City has welcomed both he and I over the years and there’s no place we’d rather be.”
“My sports guys asked me to check on the health of his knees.”
“I have a feeling as soon as Henry is walking his knees will be doing double duty. Thankfully he’s got the best trainer in the nation to make sure as long as he wants to play basketball he’ll be able to.”
“The foundation you founded with Matthias, can you tell us about that?”
“It’s for youth victims of violence. It will help with reconstructive surgery, Sharee knows a brilliant plastic surgeon that works with children and teens in The Smile Project who will be volunteering his time and skills. There are also counselors and attorneys to help with the healing process.”
“Can you tell us what got you interested in this cause?”
Matthias had finished taking pictures with their son, Henry, and sat down next to Sylvia. Cradling the newborn in her arms, Sylvia’s heart warmed. When Matthias placed his arm around her shoulder she knew she’d be okay because everything was right when she was in his embrace.
“Well Morgan, we all touch people in ways we may never even know about. Let me tell you about the worst moment in my life and how Matthias saved me from making the biggest mistake of my life without even knowing it.”
*The End*
