The Dark Bloom (The Faery Meadow Book 2) Page 12

by Lumtrexa

"Deal. Now get to it. When do I get my wings? Teach me how to use my wings it's best if we start there." Viktor commands expectantly.

That is not how this is going to go. I am going to be the one telling him what to do if he has any hope of surviving as a faery. He's pretty much defenseless right now and he still acts as cockily as he did before.

"What's that face for?" Viktor says.

"Oh nothing." I reply with a fake smile while casually walking over to him.

"Let's get on with it." He urges impatiently, while literally tapping his foot. That's the last straw.

I don't hesitate to kick him in the nuts as hard as I can. He falls to the floor with a low groan.

"Without my help, you won't survive as a faery. So I think it's my turn to be the one giving commands now don't you think?" I say while placing my hands on my hips.

"Yes...I suppose it is." He says with a pained groan.

Chapter 20-A Knock at the Door

I made Viktor help me clean up the house. I don't think he really understands the point of keeping a house clean because he has no problem complaining. Then again, I have no idea if he really knows what cleaning means. When my parents get back though they'll probably appreciate things being a bit tidier. Also, I have to admit, all this cleaning is a good stress reliever.

Someone bangs against the front door, so I set down the box of books I was planning on moving upstairs.

"Hello?" I say as I begin to open the door, only to have it slammed open all the way by James, the faery who's supposed to be watching my house while my parents are gone.

"Where have you been?! I stopped by this morning and you weren't in the house." James says accusingly.

"I...went out on a walk. You can't expect me to stay in the house the entire time they're gone." I say innocently.

"If you were in your house, you would have known that your mother called. They got the house on the market, but there's still a ton of paperwork they have to fill out yet." James says while peering over me and into my house.

"When did they say they'll get back?" I reply quickly, trying to get his attention.

"Well, honestly I don't know. I'd give it at least another week. Your Mom might come back early though, she seemed to feel bad about you being here by yourself. " He says.

"I guess they have to do what they got to." I sigh.

"So what were you doing on your walk?" James pries.

"Uh, walking?" I laugh with unease.

"It's barely been a day. Just be careful, there's rumors going around about a pixie invasion outside of Aeringdal. Hunrel is far enough, but it's only a matter of time until they stumble upon our town." He warns with a frown.

"I'll keep that in mind. Bye now." I say shutting the door quickly, before Viktor comes downstairs giving himself away. My Dad told me to separate from Viktor as soon as I got back to Hunrel, well that's just another thing I have to worry about now.

The wooden floor creaks underneath me as I walk back over to the kitchen. Viktor's being quiet, too quiet. I wander upstairs, the first room is my room and thinking that's where he'll be, I open the door.

Finding my room empty, I move past my parent's room which he happens to not be in either.

  "Viktor?" I say in confusion.

"Y-yeah." I hear him reply, but his voice wavers in an odd way. Is he...nervous?

I glance over my shoulder to see the bathroom door shut.

"What are you doing?" I ask suspiciously from the other side of the hall.

I hear the sound of metal scraping, walking over to the bathroom, I see he hasn't bothered to shut the door all the way. The high pitched scraping noise resounds again and I tap the door just hard enough so it slowly swings open.

"Getting this lump off my back is what I'm doing. Who knew faeries got such gigantic warts, of all places in the middle of my back where I can barely reach." He says angrily while digging into his back with an already blood-soaked kitchen knife. My jaw drops when I see the pool of blood at his feet, from the blood that is still dripping down his back. He's been trying to practically saw off the place that his wings are going to form from. I think I remember Lorcan warning me about metal being poisonous to fae. I got to be more careful. In fact, fae aren't even supposed to touch metal at all.

I probably should have told Viktor about that small detail.

Scrunching my eyebrows in revulsion, I step inside of the small bathroom and slap the knife out of his hand. I accidentally nick myself with the knife in the process, but oddly the cut doesn't bleed.

"What do you think you're doing!? That's where your wings will be!" I screech in shock.

"How am I supposed to live with this bump on my back! You don't have one..." He probes while glaring at me.

"That's because I already have my wings. The bump goes away when they come out for the first time. Fae aren't supposed to go near metal or silvery things...let alone cut themselves with them." I explain while still taking in all of the blood on the floor.

"Oh don't tell me you were worried about-" He begins to say, but before he can finish I slam the bathroom door shut in his face. I take a look at my hand to see some of Viktor's blood got on me from the knife, gross.

A knock comes from the front door downstairs. Again?

With a heavy sigh, I walk down the stairs and open the front door after wiping the blood off on my pants.

"Hello, Elaine." Lorcan says with a smirk.

"What are you doing...here?" I ask him slowly.

"I was asked by Colt to take you away from his brother. Is he in here?" Lorcan says while walking around me and into my house, inviting himself in. What am I going to do? Viktor's upstairs and knowing him, he'll just walk right downstairs...wait. Lorcan hasn't seen Viktor outside of his demon form. Viktor looks completely different now, like a faery, he is a faery now. Lorcan won't recognize Viktor. If he comes down here with all that blood on him though, it will give him away. He better stay upstairs.

"Lorcan, I managed to escape from him. He's still in Hell, where he belongs." I say loudly, in attempt to warn Viktor. The last thing I need is for them to fight again in my house and destroy it. I hope Viktor hears me, the best thing for him to do is hide out of sight until Lorcan goes away.

"How did you get out of Hell? And...I'm sorry for everything I've said to you, but I thought giving you some space might give you time to solve the other issues you're dealing with. I'm taking care of one of them myself actually." He says with a sly smile.

"What? And how did you find me?" I ask trying to remain calm.

"I'm holding Colt hostage. He wants to see you so I offered to get you. But I might as well get rid of his brother while I'm here, it'll save him the trouble. Colt told me where you live." He says while leaning around me to look upstairs.

"I already took care of his brother myself, like I said he's in Hell." I lie.

"You know this is the first time I've ever been in your house, I think I'll take a look around." He says lightly. He doesn't believe me.

A door slams upstairs, if I could scream at Viktor right now I would.

"I think I'll start up there." Lorcan says giving me a satisfied look.

  "Sure." I say smoothly.

He takes his time walking up the steps, every step I take sends my heart further into overdrive. Lorcan walks down the hallway quickly looking into the rooms, when he reaches the bathroom I try to come up with some way to distract him. Before I can though, he opens the door.

To my shock, the bathroom floor is spotless, with not a single drop of blood to be found anywhere. If Viktor isn't up here though, where did he go? Maybe he's hiding in one of the other rooms.

"It's smaller than your home in the human realm, isn't it?" Lorcan says while walking back downstairs.

"You know Colt thinks you are still his mate." Lorcan adds with a hint of irritation, he stands by the front door.

"You know you can't hold him hostage, what kind of deal did you make? What would you be getting by killin
g his brother-" I begin to ask, but Lorcan steps around me distracted by something behind me.

"Colt said your parents were in the human realm." Lorcan says, his voice rising.

"And they are." I defend, while walking ahead of him and into the kitchen. When I spot Viktor wolfing down what looks to be the last contents of my fridge I shoot him a panicked look. He takes his good old time setting the food down.

Lorcan comes up behind me and I'm tempted to shove him back so he won't see Viktor, but it's too late.

"And just who are you?" Lorcan asks Viktor accusingly.

"Sister, I believe we are out of food." He replies, completely ignoring Lorcan.

"Sister?" Lorcan clenches, while turning to me with a confused look.

"Yes...he's my older brother. My mother never told me about him. It turns out he's been here with my Mom the whole time. I'm still getting use to him myself, how could I have forgotten to introduce you to him?" I lie with a nervous laugh.

Lorcan looks from Viktor to me, then from me to Viktor.

"I guess I can kind of see the resemblance. What's your name?" Lorcan asks Viktor.

"Someone left the door open." I hear James yell from the front door. Of all the times to come barging into my house, he chose now to come! He was just here already today!

"What is this, some kind of party and I wasn't invited? Elaine, your father told me not to allow any strangers in your house." James says in disappointment. Okay, as long as he doesn't give Viktor away everything should be okay.

"I can invite whoever I want." I reply while crossing my arms. Suddenly, Viktor grabs Lorcan's head. He must be trying to erase Lorcan's memory through his dream walking power, which he seems to have forgotten he lost after he turned into a faery.

"Get your hands off my head, freak. Before I rip them off." Lorcan threatens. Viktor pulls back his hands, shrugging his shoulders.

"Don't call him that." I say trying to play the sister role. Viktor's lip quirks up, but I shoot him a piercing glare.

"I'll let this little get together go. I'm going to come back tonight though just to check on you." James says while walking out the front door. I really think it's unnecessary that he has to come to my house several times a day, it could be a problem.

"I'm going to have to tell Colt he was wrong then. He was so sure his brother was with you. If he's in Hell, well I'll just send Colt there to get him. I'm sure he won't mind. Take care of her while I'm gone." Lorcan says in a serious voice, toward Viktor.

"You can't kill Colt." I rush out.

"I am not going back to Hell. I hate admitting he's right, but his brother is a problem. At this point, Colt's the only one who can finish his brother off." Lorcan explains while walking towards the front door to leave.

  I grab his arm.

"Please don't do this, you're making a mistake." I plead.

"I'm not leaving yet. I'm just going to find somewhere to eat, I'll stop by later tonight before I head back." He replies with ease while shrugging off my arm, with that he leaves out the door and into town.

When I watch him walk down the sidewalk in the direction of the market, I shut the door quietly behind me.

"You know, he's going to try and take you with him." Viktor says bluntly.

"What exactly were you trying to do? Give yourself completely away, you could have hid! You were trying to get caught." I yell with frustration.

"I was going to. Then I decided I wanted to play along, and apparently my powers really are gone. I thought it was worth a try." He says while slamming the fridge door closed.

"Not to mention you ate all of the food in the house! Now I'm going to have to go out and get food." I huff.

"Everything's fine. He really believes you. He's gone now." Viktor says while sitting down on the couch.

"No he is not gone. Didn't you hear? He's coming back tonight. I can not believe you came downstairs. I should have just told him it was you." I rant while running a hand through my hair.

"But you didn't, sister." He says mockingly.

"When he comes back, promise you'll stay out of sight?" I ask him.

"I'll do my best." He says, not really promising anything.

That's probably the best I'm going to get from him, which isn't much.
