“But—”
“Samantha,” Michael said quietly, shocking her into silence. He knelt in front of her, his earnest eyes boring into hers. “Aaron is right. We’ve done quite enough for one day. It is time to regroup and come up with a new plan.”
“Agreed,” Aaron said, his tone hard.
Michael placed a hand on her knee, squeezing gently. “We’ll find a way back in. We’ll get what we need.”
When he said it in such absolute terms, it was difficult to doubt the angel. They would pick themselves up and try again.
And wow, that included her too.
Much as she might originally have intended to keep her distance, things hadn’t worked out that way. She’d fallen for beautiful, brave Aaron, and now she could never imagine leaving him...no matter what the future held for them.
If there time together on this earth wasn’t meant to last...well, then she’d cherish every moment they had together.
“So we’ll do it together,” Samantha said.
Aaron’s brows rose and he reached in to murmur in her ear. “I thought you planned on leaving.”
“That was before.” She found his hand and squeezed it tight.
His intense gaze still on hers, Aaron stood and held his hand out to her.
“Excuse us for a moment,” he said to the others.
Samantha wordlessly took his hand and stood, allowing him to lead her out into the snow. He wrapped his arms around her and held her tight, giving her warmth.
“That was before what?” he asked.
She snaked one hand between their bodies and lifted it to his face, tracing the curves and lines she’d memorized outside the prison just a few hours earlier. He was so incredibly beautiful...and he was all hers. She’d be insane to give that up.
“Before I fell in love with you,” she said simply.
His eyes lit up and a wide grin transformed his face.
“I love you too, Samantha Bensen,” he said, pressing a soft kiss to her questing fingers.
Ignoring the ache in her throat, Samantha reached up to give Aaron a full, lingering kiss on his lips. When she pulled away, he smiled once again, an expression of pure love on his face.
“Aaron, I understand the risks I’m agreeing to, and I don’t know what the future holds, but as long as we’re together, I’m willing to face it.”
His eyes shone with undeniable joy. “I wish there was more certainty for us. I desire a long, happy life for you, Samantha.”
“I don’t know about long”—she took a deep breath—“but as long as we’re together, I’ve no doubt it will be happy.”
He smiled wide and pulled her in for a deep, passionate kiss that left her all but breathless when he finally moved away.
“So... we’re in this together,” he said.
Samantha looked back toward the cabin where the others awaited them. Funny how quickly they’d all become so important to her. Like family.
An overwhelming feeling of love and hope tightened her chest. No matter how this ended...yeah, she was in it for the long haul.
“Yes.” She gave Aaron a wide, trembling smile. “Together, my love.”
