Catcalls, whoops, and whistles filled the air as he laid a long claiming kiss on her in front of a hundred or more people. This time, instead of slapping him, she reached down and grabbed double handfuls of his butt. The crowd roared with approval.

Breast cancer is ugly. No other word for it. The two women mentioned in the dedication are friends who have dealt with breast cancer and survived it. They don’t know each other, as one is a college buddy and the other is a former student of mine when I taught at a university. Their only connection is through me and that they both dealt with this nasty demon. I thought about them a lot when I planned this book’s outline and at the time, I myself had a breast biopsy to check for a potential problem. I’m glad to say my test was negative, and I’m sorry to say my friends had positive ones. Both ladies went through surgeries, chemo, and a lot of mental and physical stress, but they faced this life-changing disease with smiles, jokes, and as much joyous laughter as they could. I admire them greatly for their strength and perseverance.
Survival of this particular cancer is very high, but you have to find it early. Ladies, go treat yourself to a fun-filled mammogram. In the midst of your careers, daily tasks, families, and all the work you do for everyone around you, please don’t forget to take care of yourselves.
