Chapman turned his father around to look him in the eye. “Dad, please, what’s wrong? Where’s Kristi?”
Squire wiped the tears off his face with his sleeve, and then he used his hands, rough from years of working on the farm, to massage his temples. “Son, I don’t know. All I do know is that there was an attack at the zoo last night, and several employees were killed. I don’t know their names. Chicago lost power earlier, and they said it’s like a war zone.”
Chapman shook his head and walked a few paces away as he stared into the darkness. “My god, Dad.” He stopped, and with a puzzled look on his face, he pointed to the upstairs windows overlooking the porch. A realization came over him. “Does she—?”
Squire grimaced and the tears began to flow again. “No, son. She has no idea, and I don’t know how in the world I’m gonna be able to tell her.”
