They're Playing Our Song Page 30

by Carole Bayer Sager

Jerry Perenchio, you are one of the most incredibly caring and ethical people I have ever known, and I love you very much.

Brad and Cassandra Grey, you enrich our lives with your kindness and friendship, and you have honored us more than words can say by making us godparents to your beautiful son Jules.

Michael Govan, your vision and passion inspire me to help do what I can to make Los Angeles a world-class center of art, and in doing so you and Katherine have also become dear friends.

Carole Childs, my high school girlfriend, you were my original fan and supported my songwriting before I’d ever even had a hit.

Barbara Davis, you and your late husband Marvin showed me love and kindness from the day we met long ago in Denver, and I value you in my life.

Henry Winkler, you have always taken up my cause and have never been anything but kind and loving to me, and I will appreciate that always.

Tien Ly, thank you for teaching me so much more about being an artist than I could have ever learned alone, and thank you for being one of the kindest men I’ve ever known.

Shelli and Irving Azoff, you are family to me and I so appreciate our shared history.

Laurie Gonlag, Maybelle and Johnny Yap, Ann McDowell, José Eber, Fran Cooper, Waldo Fernandez, Cary MacMiller, Gary Stiffelman, Katja van Herle, Peter Lau, Piero Morovich, I thank you for taking care of me and making my life infinitely better just by being in it.

And then there are so many other friends, old and new—too many to list in this limited space—who have touched, and continue to touch, my heart. I hope you all know who you are, and if you’re not sure, call me.

AMANDA URBAN, YOU MADE me understand that writing is rewriting, and believed I could dig deeper. I’m very lucky to have you in my life.

Courtney Hodell, you helped me, long distance, to really understand the nature of writing a memoir, and taught me a rule I will never forget: Don’t Tell Us, Show Us. I thank you for that.

Paul Slansky, you are not only a great editor, you are the man who was able to access in me a part of myself I didn’t know how to find, and then helped me to bring it to life, and find my voice on the printed page. I am forever grateful. And through it all we enjoyed the by-products of laughter and friendship.

Megan Hogan, Larry Hughes, and Dana Trocker, thank you for making the road from manuscript to finished book easier for me by being so available to answer all of my many questions.

And lastly, to Jonathan Karp, who as a boy saw his first Broadway musical, They’re Playing Our Song, and, luckily for me, loved it. Thank you for stewarding my memoir so enthusiastically. I feel ever grateful you were at the helm of it all helping me to make it even better. As an added bonus, I loved our entertaining e-mails, and how quickly they flew back and forth. When Binky Urban sent you my book to read, I was blessed.
