Kave: Warriors of Etlon Book 3 Page 12

As they pulled through the armed gates of the Homeland Building, Barbara finally had enough.

“Look ladies, suck it up. You’ll either be chosen or not. Deal with it and act like the bad ass Earth Bitches that you are.”

She didn’t wait for the reaction, but disembarked the tram the moment it stopped. The soldier guarding the door straightened up when she gave him a glare. Thankfully, the ladies seemed to have taken her pep talk to heart and shuffled in behind her with only a sniffle or two.

“Good morning ladies,” Doug said with a reassuring and practiced smile. He wore a lab coat, but Barbara knew from experience that he had no more medical training than a typical slightly over minimum wage job. “Great to see you again. I’ve reviewed your charts, and since you’ve all been here before, I think we’ll dispense with the informational vid and get right to it. The women nodded. The vid was a grand piece of propaganda that had the president personally thanking each and every woman for their service. It was supposed to be mandatory, but unless there was a newbie in the group, most centers overlooked the mandatory part in favor of a quick and expedient testing.

“Do we have a volunteer to go first? Or alphabetical order?”

Barbara stepped forward. Doug looked relieved. “All right then.” He escorted her down a corridor. It wasn’t the small testing cubicle that she was normally taken to. It had a platform that she recognized immediately. It was a Mahdfel transporter. Her bag was already sitting on it.

“This is Celia. She’ll fill you in.” Doug practically ran from the room.

“Have a seat, Barbie” Celia said. Barbara winced at the pet name. No one ever took Barbies seriously. She’d nearly split the last non-family member in two when he’d called her that. Celia must have thought there was another reason for the glower, because she tried to hide it, but Celia was fingering a panic button built into a bangled bracelet. With one touch, the soldiers would come running.

  “I’ve already been matched, haven’t I?”

“Yes. As a soldier, you’ve already had a chip installed, and your DNA is on file, to be run on your birthday only. Your affairs are in order and well, you’re good to go.”

This was not a time to think. It was not a time to panic and freeze. She would not disgrace herself or her uniform by balking. She strode over to the platform, picking a mint out of the little bowl and mounted the steps onto the little circle. The mint was designed to keep you from tossing up your guts when you got to the other end. Part of basic training included short trips, just so they’d be ready to fight the minute they arrived at the other end.

“Thank you for your service,” Celia said meekly. She hit the button and suddenly the world was a swarm of colors and lights. The next moment she was in a jungle staring at five women who looked extremely pissed off.

  “Finally!” one shouted.

  “Good,” another said.

“It’s okay if you throw up.”

There was no way she was going to throw up in front of them. She swirled the mint in her mouth. It was bloody hot. Jane stripped off her uniform jacket.

“So,” the first one said. “Where are we?”

“More importantly, where are our husbands?”

She stared at the group, standing there with their cases and she suddenly realized that they thought she was in charge. She didn’t feel like dissuading them from that notion. No leader and they’d panic. Then there’d be more tears. She scanned the area. There was a clear path through the jungle, leading away to what she guessed would be a landing path for a small craft. Standard operating procedure. Don’t put your transporter receiver anywhere where the enemy could hijack the connection and transport into the center of your camp.

“The shuttle will be that way. She pointed up the path, which while being clear enough for one, wasn’t going to be kind on the little wheels mounted on the bottom of their suitcases. Someone will get your cases. Leave them here.” She shouldered her own duffel. She could carry her own. She started off down the path.

  “What’s your name?”

  “Call me Jane.”

Defiance was good in the field. She prided herself on being toned and though sometimes the sisters got in the way, she got more than her fair share of male attention. There was a clear group each semester that took her classes simply for her hotness factor. It had been a while, she admitted to herself, but that had been her choice. When one is on the fast track, and in front of horny students all day, it was best to play down the sexy angle, and sneak in the occasional fling with someone not in academia when she could.

But none of her skills or athletic abilities could prepare her for her current predicament. About thirty feet into the cave, she’d spotted something peculiar. It was a dark pool, nearly like someone had molded a sheet of black glass over the bottom of the cave. It wasn’t too large, but it completely blocked the way back into the rest of the cave.

That’s when Defiance did something stupid. She tested it out with the toe of her sneaker. The surface shimmered. So it was liquid. She grabbed a sample vial out of her pocket, and dipped it into the pool. Rather than pouring into the vial, it oozed over it. Defiance dropped it in surprise. The vial immediately sunk below the surface.

  “Well. That’s interesting.”

Her curiosity was now in full force. She could have sworn it had moved by itself, but that was impossible. Perhaps there was a current running silently under the surface. She had to get a sample for the lab.

She grabbed a plastic bag and covered her hand. She dipped her hand into the goo and tried to scoop it up. Instead, the blackness swallowed the bag and her hand with it. She pulled back, and pulled firmly, but she was stuck. Her hand would not come out of the pool. Panic set in and she took several deep breaths, thinking perhaps a slow tug would release her hand.

Defiance slowly put pressure on the goo, but it was immoveable. She wiggled her fingers and realized that the plastic bag was gone. Not removed. Dissolved. Absorbed.

“Let go!” Thoughts of spending her life handless made her redouble her efforts. She wrapped her free hand around her wrist and tugged. Before she could let go, the goo surged up her arm and suddenly both her hands were covered. Defiance froze like a frightened animal. It was moving.

A scientist dreamed of finding a new and exotic species and she’d never get any credit for it. She’d die before anyone ever knew. It was going to devour her. Defiance was going to be eaten by a heretofore undiscovered creature. Bracing herself against the floor, she pulled, but the ooze slowly crept up her arm. Despite the coolness of the cave, it was warm against her skin.

The creature, or whatever it was, gave her hands a yank, toppling her completely into the pool. For a moment she just lay on the surface, hands bound by goo out in front of her, but soon enough, she sank like quicksand. She rolled, head up, to breath until the last minute. Defiance was a fighter to the end.

When her intrepid grad students attempt a rescue, will Defiance really want to go?

  About Abigail

The Handyman is actually the first naughty story that I wrote, but it was secret until I was inspired to write Slut of Frankenstein as a contest with my friend, Nancey Cummings. There’s nothing like a road trip and a bottle of wine to get the juices flowing. Once my secret was out, I couldn’t get enough of writing them.

Then I discovered the world of Alpha Aliens and became a Starr Huntress. Because seriously… aliens are hot! I currently live in Los Angeles with my dog and my cats. When I’m not writing, I enjoy computer games, cheesy sci-fi TV, and crafting.

  Keep up with my shenanigans:
