When Michael Met Patrice 6 years ago…

I watched Nicole and my younger brother Kenneth stare at each other lovingly.

Even I had to admit they were a good-looking couple. I could tell Kenneth was in love by the goofy lovesick expression that would appear on his face each time he looked at Nicole. I had to admit to myself I felt a twinge of jealousy: they had something I used to have. I used to feel that way when I was with Maggie. But I screwed it up. I hoped he didn’t ruin his chance for happiness like I did.

If I knew my brother, he would do his best to fuck up in every way imaginable. If he was extremely lucky, Nicole would still be there for him but it might take a while for him to see sense. Most women can’t put up with the men in our family: we’re stupid.

“Oh my god, will the two of you cut it out? Some of us are trying to eat,” Nicole's friend Patrice said.

I looked over at the young woman who sat across from me at the table. She was gorgeous. She was African-American and thick…just the way that I like them. She had a gorgeous smile, beautiful brown eyes and unfortunately, an unpleasant attitude.

“I think it’s cute,” Jasmine interjected as she kissed her fiancé Deshawn on the cheek.

Amelia cleared her throat and looked at Deshawn and Jasmine in disgust, “I agree with Patrice for once, I don’t want to see any of that shit.”

I wondered what Amelia’s issue was but I didn’t care enough to delve. I then caught Deshawn giving an apologetic look over to Amelia. I understood immediately: he was fucking that girl or at least, he wanted to. I figured that I should say something but it wasn’t my place. I definitely don't want to get caught up in drama.

“Oh shut up.” Nicole said, “Stop being love grinches.”

Kenneth playfully patted me on the shoulder, “I’m glad you could make it, man. I think Nicole here is the one.”

Patrice made fake gagging noises and I looked over at her with disdain. I didn’t understand how such a beautiful girl could do such ugly things. I was willing to bet that she couldn’t keep a man because of her shitty attitude. No man would want to deal with that.

“You have something against love Patrice?” I asked coolly.

“Of course not,” She smiled at me, “I just think there is a time and place for everything.”

“When you love someone, it’s always the right time and place.”

Patrice rolled her eyes, “Oh please, are you in love?”

Her question caught me off guard. I was in love but the woman that I wanted didn’t want me back. “Well…”

“Took you too long to answer. So I’ll take that as a no. Don’t preach what you don’t practice sir.” She put a huge emphasis on the word ‘sir’, as if she were trying to take a jab at me being a older than the group.

“Okay, on that note, I’m going to the bathroom,” Kenneth said.

I hopped up from my seat, “I’m right behind you bro.”

Patrice scoffed, “Men follow each other to the bathroom now? Do you hold each other’s junk while you pee, too?”

Everyone at the table laughed except Kenneth and I. I didn’t see what was so funny. But it probably would have been funny if the joke were about someone else. Patrice was insufferable, brash and rude. I hated that I found her attractive. My brother and I opted to ignore her and walk away.

Before we reached the bathroom I asked Ken, “What’s her deal man? She’s pretty harsh.”

  “Who?”

  “That girl, Patrice.”

“Oh I don’t know, she’s one of Nicole’s best friends. They love each other, so I just ignore her. I think her bark is worse then her bite.”

“Well one thing is for sure, after tonight, I hope I never have to meet that woman again...”

  #Chapter1

“When did you start liking white men?”

  Patrice's Mom

I awoke by being kissed all over my face. Since we’ve been together, I noticed I slept like a rock when I slept with Michael. I hadn’t slept this well in a long time.

“Good morning beautiful,” he said as I slowly opened my eyes. I was surprised to see him fully dressed.

  “You’re leaving?”

“I have to head home because I have meetings in a couple of hours. Let’s get together this evening to talk things over.” He placed a kiss on my forehead and then my lips before heading out of the door. I was too groggy to stop him.

I looked over at the clock and saw it was only 7:30 in the morning. I was grateful it was Sunday. I sighed happily and pulled the covers over my head. I smiled to myself: we were finally a couple! I was getting everything I wanted and I didn’t have any complaints.

My stomach did a minor dip when I remembered he had something to tell me. I didn’t feel ready for any bad news so soon. I took a few deep breaths and tried to convince myself the news couldn’t be that bad. He was supposed to tell me when we woke up but he slipped out of the door before I had the chance to bring it up.

He was lucky I was in a great mood. If I weren’t, I would’ve called him and demanded that he tell me what was going on. But my body was still buzzing and aching from the night before. I felt amazing. I would go throughout my day, see him in the evening, and let the chips fall where they may. I drifted off to sleep with a content smile on my face.

  *

When I woke up fully the only person I wanted to talk to was Nicole. I didn’t care about what time it was in Paris. I wanted to talk to my friend and share the good news with her. I looked over to my left and grinned when I saw that Michael left his cufflinks on my nightstand. My boyfriend was leaving things at my house,
I thought giddily.

“Get it together, Patrice. You act like you’ve never had a man before.” I said to myself. Well, I’d never had one as amazing like Michael, who made my heart sing. When he told me he loved me, I couldn’t believe it, I thought I was the only one who had those feelings but to know that the feeling was mutual…that meant everything to me.

I made a decision to get my attitude in check. I couldn’t keep him if I popped off about everything. No man wants a crazy ass nag hanging around. But he also said it was a part of my charm. I had no intentions of changing who I was but I knew I had to scale it back. I was woman enough to admit I had a character flaw. I felt fortunate he still wanted to be with me, despite my flaws.

Before I got a chance to call Nicole, my phone rang: it was my mother. My heart raced, I knew she was going to rip me a new one. I hadn’t spoken to her in over two weeks because I’d been ignoring her phone calls. In fact, I’d been ignoring all of my family’s phone calls.

My mom lived in Florida and she was doing her best to try to get me to move there. According to her, I didn’t have a man so nothing was keeping me in Atlanta. She hated that I passed up a chance to go to Northwestern in Chicago. It was too damn cold there and I wasn’t cut out for it. I wanted to stay where I was comfortable and it had always been a dream of mine to go to Spelman.

She wanted me to go and explore more of what the world had to offer. I had told her that I would have plenty of time to do that. There was always something special about Spelman women to me, and I was determined to be one of them. I remembered the conversation like it was happened yesterday:

“Aww that’s nice,” my mom had said, “You have to make sure to tell them that you’re going to Northwestern.”

“But I’m not going there, I told you that.”

“Stop playing with me Patrice. Both of your brothers went there and they loved it. You want to go into business and that’s the perfect school.”

I had put my fingers up to my ears and sang. I got my horrible attitude from my mother, but I would never disrespect her verbally. I just had to ignore her until she went away. It wasn’t her decision to make; it was my own.

And, I had done what I wanted and ended up finding the two of the best friends a woman could ask for. I never regretted my decision. No one has to live my life but me. If I’m going to regret my life, it’s going to be based on the decisions that I personally made.

I caught the phone before it went to voicemail.

  “Hello.”

  “Oh, so she is alive!”

  “Hi mom,” I sighed.

“Don’t ‘hi mom’ me. Where in the hell have you been? I thought that I was going to have to send a search party to look for your ass.”

“There is no need for you to talk to me like that.”

“Well, my nice vocabulary went out of the window last week. If you would’ve answered your damn phone when I called, you would’ve heard it.”

  “I’m sorry, I’ve been busy.”

“You should never be too busy for me.”

  “I know, you’re right. I’m sorry.”

The easiest way to cool my mother off was to apologize. She was always a sucker for an apology. I learned to get it out of the way quickly so that we could move on.

“Well, you should be sorry, I’ve missed you.”

“I’ve missed you too, mom. I’m sorry about not being around. I’ll be better about it.”

  “And your brothers?”

  “Yes, and my brothers.”

“Good. Now that we’ve gotten that out of the way, how have you been?”

“I’ve been doing really good,” I beamed. My thoughts returned to Michael as I spoke to her.

“So the agency is doing well.”

  “Extremely well.”

“That’s great to hear. I thought you were crazy when you said you wanted to do that for a living. But you’ve proved me wrong.”

“I work hard to get what I want. I know that you wanted me to do something different but I’m happy.”

  “That’s all that matters, baby.”

“Speaking of happy, I’m in a relationship now.”

  “What? With who?”

“His name is Michael. He’s Kenneth’s brother.”

  “Kenneth is Nicole’s man right?”

  “Yes he is.”

  “Oh, wow.”

“What is that supposed to mean?”

  “It doesn’t mean anything.”

She was lying through her teeth. Her tone told me that everything was wrong. She was just holding back. And because I knew her as well I as I did, I knew it would be better to get things out in the open so we could hash it out now.

“You and I both know that what you’re saying isn’t true.”

  “Well, it’s just that…”

  “It’s just that what?”

“When did you start liking white men? I know that’s something Nicole does but why do you have to do it, too? Is there something in the water in Atlanta?”

I gave a long sigh, “You say it as if he’s a different species. We’re all people mom.”

“Now you’re just kidding yourself. I have to tell you just like I told your brothers, ‘don’t bring home anyone that doesn’t know your struggle.’”

“See now you’re just being ridiculous.”

“It’s not ridiculous. You’re so hard up to find a man that you had to go out and get a white one? What does he want with you, anyway? Do you really think he’s going to be serious? How many men like him really get with women like you?”

I was seething but held my tongue. She was my mother and I usually let her say whatever she wanted, but in this instance, she was crossing a line.

“What do you mean when you say “women like me?”

“Dark and plus size,” she said without flinching, “Usually when they get with black women, they look like Barbie’s.”

“I don’t even know what to say to you right now.”

“How about you honestly answer my question. Patrice, you don’t have to settle, baby. Just be patient and you’ll find a good, strong black man that really wants to be with you.”

“Right because they’re all lining up at my door mom. I’m not concerned about color, I just want to be with someone that loves me.”

“Oh, so the two of you love each other?”

  “Yes we do.”

  “Mmm.”

  “Now what does that mean?”

“Have you met any of his friends? Does he claim you publically?”

“Whatever mom, I don’t have to justify my relationship to you. I was telling you out of courtesy, not asking for permission.”

“That’s fine, just don’t come crying to me when…”

“When have I ever come crying to you? Look, I have things to do today. I’ll keep my word and talk to you more but this subject isn’t open for discussion. I love you and I’ll talk to you later.”

I hung up the phone without waiting for her response. As much as I didn’t want to admit it, she had struck a nerve. She had a real talent for playing with my insecurities.

I also couldn’t let her know about Michael and mine’s past, how she was absolutely right: he hadn’t introduced me to people outside of our circle. But it wasn’t because of my race. He was like that with all of the women he dated because he had commitment issues. But he swore that part of his life was over.

I swear… My mom could ruin a wet dream.

I hurriedly called Nicole to calm myself down.

“Hey girly!” Nicole squealed when she picked up the phone. It was so good to hear her voice once again.

“Hey beautiful, I just wanted to check up on you.”

“Awww, I’m doing great. I really miss my girls, though.”

“Miss you too! What are you up to?”

“You caught me at a really good time. We’re getting ready to go out for the evening.”

“Wow, I’m just waking up for the day. It’s hard to believe it’
s almost evening for you.”

“Yeah, the time difference took a while for me to get used to.”

“Well, I don’t want to keep you from going out.”

“Don’t be silly. Did you want something in particular? You have that tone.”

  “What tone?”

“That tone you get when you need to talk.”
