  ADDITIONAL LISTENING

To contextualize Bon’s recordings, sample a cross section of ’60s and ’70s Australian rock. For many years the definitive compilation of the ‘60s Australian scene was Glenn A. Baker’s two double-album volumes of So You Wanna Be A Rock’n’roll Star (Festival): The “Scream” Years, 1964-66 and The Psychedelic Years, 1967-70. Baker’s own reissue label, Raven Records (not to be confused with the Raven that released one of Fraternity’s singles) has subsequently released no less than four volumes of Sixties Downunder, on CD, but Festival/Mushroom has also repackaged So You Wanna Be a Rock’n’roll Star in its entirety as a 3CD set; it’s still the best source, if you supplement it with Raven’s Ugly Things CD, a Pebbles-like collection of ’60s garage bands.

Raven’s Boogie, Balls & Blues hasn’t yet made the transition from vinyl to CD, but the label has two fine CD collections that cover the early-to-mid ‘70s: Golden Miles: Australian Progressive Rock 1969-1974 and Seventies Downunder. There’s also an Alberts double set, Goodtimes, on CD, while Raven’s Do Y’self a Favour: The Countdown Years, 1975-1979 includes many Alberts hits of the era plus much more (Raven Records’ web site is www.ravenrecords.com.au).

And the absolute completist who wants every note Bon got down on vinyl must have Blackfeather’s classic 1971 album At The Mountains of Madness (Infinity Records, re-released on CD by Festival). Bon plays recorder on a couple of tracks, including the hit version of the single “Seasons of Change,” which Bon’s own band Fraternity also covered.
