When I Fall Page 31

by Tamara Morgan

“Is it a helicopter come to whisk me out of my misery?”

“No.” There was that chuckle again. “But I was reading up, and it sounds like some of your silly wrist acupressure points are used to control motion sickness.”

She sat up a little, feeling a smile touch her lips. “You mean you’ve been reading up on alternative health methods? Have you discovered my trove of Traditional Chinese Medicine textbooks?”

“Maybe. Don’t gloat.” He pulled out a pair of wristbands that looked like cheap plastic watches. She watched, amused, as he lifted her hands and secured each one in place, lingering over her left hand, where her ring was now a permanent fixture. He dropped a kiss to each palm. “There. Give it half an hour. If they don’t work, we can head back to Naples and get you your helicopter.”

“Oh, that’s so sweet. If I had a dollar for every time a man offered to get me a helicopter...”

She wasn’t sure if the nausea was abating yet, but Jake began running his hands through her hair, bringing her another kind of comfort. A familiar kind of comfort—the kind of comfort entire lives could be built on.

“I hope it won’t be too boring for you, staying with the Bridgeports,” he said, working his magic while the wristbands worked theirs. “We don’t have to do this, you know. I can call Monty and tell him to fuck off. It’d be my pleasure, actually.”

  “It’s okay. I like it.”

“That’s probably because you haven’t met Ricky and his wife yet.”

“No, stupid—I like this. You and me, sharing our lives. Me adding some excitement to your boring house parties. You forcing the Montgomery Foundation to invest in struggling theaters in the city. We’re like a power couple now.”

“To be fair, I get half my pleasure in doing it to thwart Monty. He hates the arts. He and your mom’s financial advisor have that in common.” His hands moved down her hairline to her neck, slipping surreptitiously down the collar of her striped boat-necked tee. She might not feel like a sailor, but she certainly looked like one. “Feeling better yet?”

“A little.” She sat up, looking over the rigging and beams and all sorts of things she didn’t understand but was rapidly coming to appreciate as all that stood between her and sudden death. “But shouldn’t you be hoisting the mainsail or something?”

“Nah. This old girl practically sails herself.” He smiled, slow and tiger-like, a grin he reserved for her and her alone. “Besides—there’s supposed to be a crescent moon tonight.”

  “A crescent moon?”

“Oh, yes. We may even have to get out the flashlight.”

  About the Author

Tamara Morgan is a contemporary romance author of humorous, heartfelt stories with flawed heroes and heroines designed to get your hackles up and make your heart melt. Her long-lived affinity for romance novels survived a BA degree in English literature, after which time she discovered it was much more fun to create stories than analyze the life out of them.

Whether building Victorian dollhouses, consuming mass quantities of coffee and wine, or crying over cheesy 1950s musicals, Tamara commits to her flaws like every good heroine should. She lives in the Inland Northwest with her husband, daughter and variety of household pets, and only occasionally complains about the weather.

Where no great story goes untold.

The variety you want to read, the stories authors have always wanted to write.
