  Chapter One

I can feel the branches slapping at my yellow summer dress and I feel them snagging and know that the material is being destroyed with each step that I make. My breath is short and I don’t know how much longer I can keep up this pace. I don’t have any shoes on and I can feel the pebbles and small branches digging into the bottom of my feet. I can hear his labored breathing behind me and his footsteps getting closer.

I’m not exactly stick thin and I thought that I had accepted the fact that I was not like normal girls. William had made me feel trapped in a relationship that was going nowhere. He had made me feel self conscious, even though I’ve noticed the looks that I’ve gotten and they have always been favorable. That is anytime that he allows me to go out without him. He keeps telling me that I’m not worthy of love and that he’s the only man that’s ever going to find me attractive.

In the cold light of day, I think he’s right, but that soon changes every time that I go to the bathroom and see my reflection staring back at me. I was a redheaded vixen, natural in that the rug matched the curtains.

I’ve always prided myself on my appearance and I was comfortable in my own skin. It was only after I met William that I started to feel like I was less than who I was. He had turned me into a basket case and his verbal abuse had made me make a very drastic decision.

He took me for a drive in the country and at first I thought that we were getting back to nature, but then things changed. His demeanor became hard and unyielding and when he started touching me after pulling over on the side of the road. It was not in a consensual way. I realized his intentions and I took off, slipping out of the door and making a run for it.

I still didn’t know where I was or if there was any semblance of life to speak of in the area. Each time that I came to a clearing, it was like I was in my own little world with no way out.

“Stacy, you can’t keep this up forever. You’re overweight, you don’t work out and your lungs must be burning.” What he didn’t know was that I jogged daily, did Pilates twice a week and had a pretty good stamina to keep going for at least a little while.

My legs were feeling the fatigue, but each time that I felt like I was hitting that wall, I would push myself through it. It might have been better if I was wearing my jogging shoes, but with nothing on my feet, the strain on my legs was getting to the point that I wasn’t sure how much more I could take.

“Stay away from me, William. I don’t want anything to do with you anymore.”

This only angered him further and I could literally feel his hot breath on the back of my neck. I knew that I was just projecting, but it sure did feel like he was right on my heels.

“I think that we should call it quits. We’re obviously not good for each other and if we don’t make a clean cut now, then I don’t know where we will be in two months from now.”

I was giving him every reason to turn around and go back, but I had a feeling that he wasn’t even going to entertain that idea.

Every tree looked the same and I tried to go in a straight line, but there were times that I got turned around.

“I don’t understand why you would say these things to me. I thought that we were in love. You know that nobody will love you like I do. No other man will look at you.”

He was always spouting the same rhetoric and there were moments in our relationship in the last five years that I began to believe him.

“You’re not going to find anybody better and you may as well just get used to the fact that we are destined to die in each other’s arms.”

It was a weird thing for him to say and it only made me force myself past my own endurance.

“William, I’ve already told you that…”

I didn’t have a chance to finish my statement, because I walked off of a very steep incline and began to tumble into the ravine below. I tried to grab on to anything that I could, but it was a useless endeavor. The best I could do was cover my face and hope that I didn’t end up with any broken bones. The impact was quite jarring and I could feel it each time that a rock struck me over and over again.

I don’t know how long I continued to freefall, seeing the world from different angles and then I finally slammed heavily into a tree. I lie there against it, feeling the bark digging into my back and smelling Lilacs in the air.

If that tree didn’t stop me and blow the wind out of me, I would be sprawled across those rocks down below. That was the kind of fall that not many people would be able to survive/ I was counting my lucky stars that I didn’t go down that path.

  I tried t
o move, but the only thing I could feel was this pain radiating up my arms and legs. I had gashes that were bleeding profusely and I could feel something wet on my lips. When I swept my tongue across my lips, it was the taste of copper that I got back, which of course was my own blood.

“Stacy, you seemed to have taken a nasty fall. It looks like you can’t get up. You know, I’ve been giving it some thought and if I can’t have you, then I don’t think anybody should. Then again, I don’t think anybody would want you, but why take chances.”

He had his hand underneath my chin and he lifted me up, so that we were now eye to eye.

“You really shouldn’t have run from me. I’ve always said that you were a klutz and with two left feet, it’s any wonder that you don’t get into more accidents.”

I didn’t even know how fast I was going and it literally felt like I was running in midair.

“William, just leave me alone. I don’t want your help.”

The look in his eyes told me that he wasn’t at all interested in giving me any of his help.

“What exactly do you want me to say? I think that we’ve gotten to a point in our relationship that we have to decide to walk away. You might be the same man that you were when we first met, but I’m different now. I now see what you’ve been trying to do. I’m not going to allow you to push me back down.”

With his boot, he started to kick me away from the tree and over to the edge of the cliff.

He grabbed me by the hair and made me scramble on my hands and knees, until I was overlooking this countryside. I could see the beauty and the devastation that he could inflict on me with one push of his fingers against my back.

I dug my fingernails into his hand, but even that pain was not slowing down his momentum. In fact, I think it was only fueling his rage and suddenly his hand was wrenched free from my hair. I fell face first down into the dirt. I heard something, but it was mostly like hearing voices inside a tunnel.

“You can’t treat people like that and not expect somebody to do something about it. You may think that you’re stronger, but try picking on someone your own size.”

I looked back to see the shadow of a man, a behemoth with muscles that were bulging through the black shirt that he was wearing. The way that he was pummeling William almost put a smile on my cut lips.

It was like watching a boxer with an inferior foe getting the tar beaten out of him. Each time that William tried to amount some sort of attack, his fists were less than useless. I thought I was imagining things, but then I saw what looked like some kind of yellow energy coming from this man’s palm.

He was striking into William’s rib cage and sternum. William began to shake uncontrollably and then just as I was losing consciousness; I saw what I thought was William been ripped apart molecule by molecule. It was like he exploded into a million pieces. My eyes felt heavy and my vision was blurred. I was most likely suffering from some kind of concussion.

The last thing I remember is feeling safe and letting the pain take me away too another place. The man was a virtual stranger, but he had come to my rescue like my own personal knight in shining armor.

I thought for sure that I was dead, but a momentary reprieve in the form of a tall, dark and handsome man had awakened an ember inside me that I thought was long dead and buried. I didn’t get a good look at his face, but there was this feeling in the air that surrounded me like my own personal aura.

I saw him hovering over top of me with my eyelids fluttering in semi consciousness. He lifted me easily into his arms and I lie there with the feel of the hot sun beating down on my face. I think he said something, but it must’ve gotten lost in translation.

  Chapter Two

When I woke up, it was like I had woken up inside my own fairy tale with billowing white drapes from two doors leading onto a balcony now rippling into the room. The four poster bed was covered with a black duvet that made me feel like I was floating on a cloud. I was able to open one eye, but the other one remained partially shut and that feeling of pain had subsided somewhat.

“It’s nice to see that you’re awake.”

A man was standing in the threshold wearing a white pair of pants and shirt to match. The first three buttons were undone and I could see the definition of his pectorals. His hair was long and flowing, clean shaven and he must have weighed over 200 pounds. If this was heaven, then I had no interest in going back to earth.

  “Where am I?”

I tried to raise my head, but it was like I was trying to lift a 10 pound weight.

“My name is Ash Spencer. This is my home and you’re my guest for as long as you want to be here.”

He looked like an angel. It might have been because of the sun streaming through the window and hitting him in just the right way. For a moment there, I thought that he was wearing a halo.

“I came upon you during an altercation with your boyfriend. I thought it best that I intervene, even though I’m not usually prone to doing anything of the sort. I keep to myself and I don’t like complications.”

Just looking at him standing there and at the opulent surroundings made me feel like he was the king of his castle.

  “What happened to William?”

I had no idea why I even cared about his well being, especially after what he tried to do to me. If this man did not come to my rescue, I would most likely be dead on the rocks. William would have to carry that burden and my blood on his hands for the rest of his life.

“Don’t worry about him, because he’s not going to bother you anymore. We had a few words and then he decided that it was in his best interest to leave.”

This was not what I remembered, but most of it was hazy and distorted images that seemed to be trying to tell me something.

“He said that he’s not going to be in your life anymore.”

I knew that he was lying about something and it was almost like it was written across his face with neon letters.

“I don’t feel so good.” I was a little dizzy and I had a hard time trying to say coherent sentences.

“Stacy, you took a terrible fall and you broke two ribs, your shoulder was dislocated and there were various lacerations that had to be taken care of. It could’ve been worse and you should feel lucky that I got to you when I did.”

Even in my condition, I couldn’t help but to undress him with my eyes. I felt like he was dangerous, but I didn’t know how I could justify such an immediate response.

  “I need to…leave.”

I tried to rise up on my elbows, but he easily pushed me down with the flat of his hand.

“We can talk about that later. For right now, you need rest and time to mend. I’m at your service. I don’t think that I could live with myself if something happened to you. You need to stay here for a little bit longer.”

There was something in his eyes that started a stirring down below. It was then that I noticed that I was only wearing my bra and panties. I tried to cover up with my hands, but it seemed almost pointless, especially since he had already seen me in this half undressed state.

“I took the liberty of getting you out of those clothes. They were constricting and they were making it very difficult to tend to your wounds. Don’t worry; I didn’t see anything, except for a few brief peeks.”

The one thing I loved more than anything was my lingerie collection. I bought different items to wear underneath my conventional clothing. They made me feel special, wanted and cradled me like a newborn baby.

The lace fabric gave me that sexual feeling. It was the perfect way to be a woman and not show any weakness in front of William. I was glad that I was never going to see him again, but there was something nagging at my subconscious.

“I need to make a phone call.” He shrugged his shoulders and made a motion to the room, where I noticed that there was not a phone to be seen.

“I’m afraid that we’re in the middle of nowhere and there is no cell reception. I have no phones and the nearest town is at least 3 hou
rs away by car. When you’re feeling better, I will take you into town and you can make that phone call. I’m sure that people are looking for you and are worried that you’re not home.”

“I don’t have anybody, besides William. My parents died a long time ago and I’ve always been an only child. My best friend is serving a tour overseas and we’ve been barely talking as of late.”

It finally dawned on me that he was just fishing for information to make sure that nobody was going to come looking for me. I had walked right into his trap and I had done it, so freely that it felt almost natural.

I traced the outline of his muscles with my eyes, paying particular attention to a certain elongated piece that was now making its presence known. I saw the outline of it and it didn’t look real. There was no way that he could possibly be packing something like that. This was a legend in the making and only a few strong men could claim to be hung like horses.

“I will stay for one day and then after that I want to leave.”

He put his hands up in mock surrender, like he was giving in and yet I still felt like his intention were not pure.

“I mean it. I’m not going to stay here with someone that I barely know. It doesn’t matter if you saved me from a fate worse than death. I’m not some invalid and believe me I can stand up on my own 2 feet.”

I may not be able to do that right now, but bones become stronger after time. The wounds that I had would heal given enough time.

“Like I said, we can talk about that when you’re feeling better. There’s no reason to get into that. I’ll be back with your supper in a couple of hours. I gave you a mild sedative with the water that you are currently drinking.”

I didn’t even realize that I had the glass in my hand. Looking at it, I could suddenly feel the cool surface and watched, as the liquid seemed to swirl with different colors. I was definitely under the influence of something and whatever he gave me was having the desired results.
