“What is this for? I mean what does this mean?” I stuttered.
“It’s to replace the rock that you seem to miss that you returned to Frank, and it can mean whatever you want it to mean. I want it to mean that we are together forever, but I know how you feel. If you want to wear it, it will mean a lot to me, or you can keep it until you’re ready to wear it. It’s your call.”
I stared at the ring, and then I looked at Carlos. His expression reminded me of a kid who just got his first car.
“I think I’d like to wear it sometimes, as long as you can live with my not being ready to get married,” I said.
“It’s a start,” Carlos said. He leaned across the table and gave me the kind of kiss that made me tell him to hurry up and get the check so we can go home.
So as I told you at the beginning, I answered two phone calls that changed my life. Liz and Luis brought me all kinds of new clients, but best of all they became my friends for life. Elected officials from all over the state are calling to hire me after they are indicted. After all, this is Florida. I’ve even had a call from the American Bar Association looking for defense attorneys to represent Guantanamo detainees, but that would mean leaving my practice and Carlos and Sam. I may need to listen to Catherine and hire another attorney just to screen the cases.
Right now, I’m sitting in my living room looking at the diamond ring and wondering where it is leading me.
The phone is ringing. “Hello?”
“Mary, it’s Franco. Thank God you’re home. I’m at the Dade County jail. Can you come down here?”
“Of course, what happened?”
“I got in a little altercation with my wife and she called the cops. When they got there they said they had a warrant for my arrest for bribing a cop.”
“When was that?”
“When I paid that guy to get your car out of the impound lot.”
“I’ll be right there, Franco. Don’t talk to anyone. Tell them your lawyer, Mary Magruder Katz, is on her way.”
