When Kate finished talking, I offered her my sincere congratulations and wished her all the best. I had to go see another client, I lied, then walked out of Penguin House feeling a tremendous sense of satisfaction, as if I really helped make a difference in the life of someone who deserved to have good things come their way. I wanted to believe Debbie also felt great satisfaction hearing Kate talk about the future with such optimism. As a dedicated public defender, Debbie knew only too well that confidence in a brighter future was not an outlook often expressed by her clients. No doubt, a heavy toll had been exacted on Debbie’s perspective on life, and, no doubt, she probably didn’t appreciate my presence at the table. I really couldn’t blame her.
