Helen’s stomach was knotted. Would it get through? The supervisor straightened up, took a further look at the communion set then smiled, admired the set and wished Helen a safe journey home. While unable to hear the words, Sam and the others were able to read the body language and everyone relaxed. They were going to get the dagger away, safe to a place where nobody would think to look. Helen relaxed, it would soon be out of sight, and hidden beyond anyone’s reach, forever.
Turning to her friends, Helen smiled, signalling success, then she turned back to the counter. The security supervisor looked at Sam and the others. She smiled too; nice bunch, she thought.
Set high on the wall above the counter, a security camera’s little red recording indicator glowed as the events below were captured. The camera caught the glistening high spots of reflected light as the polished plate, cup and cross all sat proudly on the counter. Framed behind them was Helen Johnson’s smiling face, beyond her, just in the edge of the frame, were her friends. The stream of recorded images fired down the line into the airport’s security drives.
Just for the record, a happy group of friends, an everyday airport au revoir.
