Stunned, Alfie scrambled to his feet. Noura had already leapt over the front fence.
‘But, Noura, don’t you think it’s terrible? From now on, you’ll be a werewolf like me. Every full moon you’ll turn into a wolf. Usually three nights in a row.’
Out in the middle of the road, Noura looked up at the moon and let out a cheerful howl.
‘Don’t be such a wet blanket, Alfie the Werewolf. I love it. And I bet I’m faster than you are.’
Alfie’s heart leapt with joy. Noura was happy. Everything was OK. A big grin appeared on his face.
‘Really?’ he growled. ‘You think you’re faster? Just wait!’ With one leap he was over the fence. ‘Here I come, Noura!’
The black wolf was already at the end of the street.
‘Noura, wait for me,’ Alfie shouted. ‘Shall we go out to dinner? It’s on me. I know a fantastic henhouse. Right out on the other side of town.’
‘Deal!’ Noura called back.
She waited until Alfie had caught up to her, then the two young werewolves ran off down the street together, their shadows merging in the light of the full moon.
