  ACKNOWLEDGMENTS

Following the publication of Holy Island, the first in the series of DCI Ryan mysteries, I was simply overwhelmed by the support of family, friends and the many thousands of readers who enjoyed a story set in beautiful Northumberland. As a first-time author, I had no preconceived ideas about how my debut novel would be received, but the warmth of its reception has blown me away. To all the readers who left reviews and sent messages, I offer my thanks and gratitude in helping it to reach the number one slot in the Amazon chart for the United Kingdom.

It is a truth universally acknowledged that a sequel is vastly more difficult to write and I can wholeheartedly concur. Gallons of coffee went into the making of this book and multiple endings were considered. Throughout the process, my small army of confidantes, friends and consultants have helped me to steer the story along what I hope is the right path. As always, my husband James has been wonderful. He has lived with the creative moods and subjected himself to multiple read-throughs and first-stage editing. He is the ‘J’ in ‘LJ Ross’ for very good reason: I might write the stories, but he keeps them afloat by helping me to focus on what I love best: the storytelling. My son, Ethan, is like a breath of fresh air on days when I can’t seem to find the next scene and it is for him that I strive to write anything at all. My mother, father and sister have offered their constant love and support, not only in this venture as an author but in all the years before it. Rachael, thank you for loaning your fabulous hair to MacKenzie, along with your feisty spirit!

Special thanks go to James Moffa for the loan of his name and for allowing me to change his character completely for the purposes of fiction: I hope that he enjoys his gangster alter ego. Likewise, to Mary, Waleed and Kirsten for their medical and technical knowledge, and to Helen Greenhalgh for her insights into police procedure, which was much appreciated. As always, thanks to all of my friends who have encouraged me along the way and have helped to shape this book with their unfailing confidence. To Roger Clegg, I thank him for the use of his very special photograph in forming the cover of the book.

Extra special thanks go to Millie, a smart young cookie who inspired a new female character who is possessed of brains as well as beauty, just like her.
