She kissed him softly on his lips. “I love you. And I promise you that I will never ever leave you. I no longer feel scared to take chances...as long as I can have you in my life as my husband."
"Are you proposing to me?" he asked in amusement.
"Hell yeah! And if you ever try to leave me, I will chase you again and again, even if you throw out my stuff or even if you have me ejected bodily," she told him laughing softly through her tears.
"I promise to never push you away again too. I love you and I would love to be your husband and the father of our children," he said huskily, nuzzling her neck.
She slipped out of his arms and looked at him sultrily. "Perfect. Now let's celebrate our engagement with some wild illicit sex for the last few times before we make it boringly legal," she ordered, while removing her clothes in hurry and throwing them next to his bed.
Then she smiled wickedly. “I think most people at this point of reconciliation would have some deep, soul searching conversations about eternal love and blah blah. Do you want to?” she asked.
He laughed. "No. I’m more than eager to provide that other service first before those talks. By the way, where are my parents?" he asked curiously, as she went towards him and pulled up his shirt, and then unbuttoned his shorts to pull them down. He helped her by raising his hips.
Soon, they both were naked.
"They went to their city home and we are totally alone in this house," she replied, greedily running her fingers all over his body.
He pulled her down on the bed and climbed on top of her.
He cupped her face to kiss her deeply and then softly before raising his head. "Good. Now...hold on tightly to the headboard. This round is going to be hard and fast," he said, looking down at her hungrily, and reminding her of their first day together in San Francisco.
We have come a long way since that day, my love, she thought, looking at him in fierce anticipation.
EPILOGUE
TEN YEARS LATER
It was almost half past one after midnight and the house was quiet. Mahi was getting back from her monthly girls night out with her friends. Ananya and her friends had also joined them and they all had a blast at the ladies-night-out event in one of the happening clubs.
It was also a celebration of sorts because Mahi had been appointed as the CIO of the company a few weeks ago.
Samrat had used his 'wish' to make her apply and then interview for the open CIO position. She had been a little reluctant at first, thinking that people wouldn't like it since the company was founded by her husband and he was still the chairman.
"To Mahi, may you reach more successes such as these," toasted everyone at their booth.
"God, I hope so. Even though some people at work think it reeks of nepotism," she said with a wry smile.
"Are you kidding me? You worked your ass off these past ten years, while also getting your MBA and raising a child," said Ashwini.
"Yes. And you were the brains behind the highly successful apps and games based on education, social awareness and other philanthropic causes," said Smitha.
"Yeah, Samrat's support and help made it possible to do all those things."
"To Samrat and all the supportive hubbies," said Jhanvi, raising her glass.
Everyone raised a toast to that.
Mahi smiled, recalling how much later that night, they began to swap some funny and naughty stories. It was weird talking about them, when Ananya was present. But Ananya was game, and told them some raunchy, but funny stories involving Sidhu which were truly hilarious.
Both Ananya and she had gotten closer to each other in the last ten years. Even though they weren't best of friends, she had often called Ananya to ask for her advice regarding Dhruv, and Ananya had sometimes taken her help regarding Srishti. They had a healthy respect for each other and met pretty often because they were family.
Mahi went quietly to the kid's room and looked down.
Dhruv lay on a car shaped bed, his sweet face curved up in a smile while he dreamt peacefully. Bending down, she kissed him softly on his forehead. When she stood up to leave, she noticed that next to him on the night stand were a couple of science magazines that had the pictures of the latest inventions and technology.
She rolled her eyes, smiling to herself and went towards the master bedroom.
Three years after their marriage, she began trying to conceive. She remembered how devastated she had been after the doctors had told her that based on her medical history and the test results, she might not be able to carry a healthy baby to term. It had made a ton of difference having Samrat next to her, dealing with that news and also later, when he said that it didn't matter if their child didn't carry their genes.
Six months after that news, they adopted a baby boy who became their whole world the moment he was placed in their arms.
A few months ago, when Dhruv turned six, they explained to him that he was adopted. They did not want him finding out from some other sources.
"So, I didn't come out from mummy's stomach like other children?" Dhruv had asked in fascination.
"No. You came out from mummy and daddy's heart, instead," Samrat told their son.
Mahi smiled recalling that part of the conversation.
The bedroom light was still on and Samrat was still up, reading something on a device.
The last ten years had changed his appearance, making him even more handsome and distinguished. With his reading glasses, and a few grays at his temples and side burns, she found him even sexier and sometimes made him wear his glasses during sex.
When Samrat saw her, he put his device away along with his glasses and then leaned back on the headboard with his arms folded behind his head.
"How was the ladies night out event? Did you have fun?" he asked huskily as his eyes swept over her off-shoulder, figure hugging short dress and high heels.
"Very. We danced and shouted like crazy. Most of the crowd was our age, so they played some old throwback songs that we sang along with. I can't believe I still remember those horrible lyrics," she said and was about to head to the closet to grab her nightclothes.
"Don't change yet. Did you forget your promise from early this evening? Come here," he demanded softly.
"Oh yeah. I remember that. I just thought you would be too tired or sleepy by now," she said and went towards him with an exaggerated swing to her hips. "So, how was your evening?"
He smiled. "I'm not that tired. My evening was pretty mundane. Dhruv took a little bit of my help to finish building the last of his three thousand pieces super heroes Lego set. Then we had a long bath slash play time followed by dinner. After I promised to read him some bed time story books, he stopped whining, and shoved his food into his mouth quickly and finished everything on his plate."
She raised her eyebrow. "I saw those. No wonder he's always demanding his daddy to read him the bedtime stories rather than mummy's boring fairy tales," she said, sitting on the bed next to him.
"Well...six year old boys get bored of fairy tales someday. And if he's anything like his daddy, then he will find the helpless, innocent and sad little princesses who always seem to be in need of a rescue—very boring to read about. We like them wild and outrageous," he said, getting down and then pushing her back gently on the bed. Then he adjusted her body and kept her legs slightly off the bed.
She laughed. "He definitely takes after you. His eyes lit up whenever the wicked witches made an appearance. And you also passed on your insane thirst of learning how things work and to build 'cool' stuff."
He kissed her feet and slowly dropped one of her shoes on the floor. "Well...then you passed your mischievousness along with pulling some or other tricks on helpless people around."
She slowly grinned. "I know." And then she sighed in content. "I thank god every day for bringing him into our life."
His hands moved under her dress, to pull down her panties, making her groan softly.
"Me too," he said, kissing her other foot an
d dropping the other shoe.
Adjusting a little, she widened her legs, so he had better access, "Oh, by the way, I hope you have some plans for our tenth wedding anniversary that's coming up in a couple of months. Everyone was asking me about it tonight, and I told them you had a surprise for me, even though I think I can pretty much guess where," she said shakily, as she felt him kissing his way up.
When he was close enough, she clutched his hair and squirmed restlessly.
"All taken care of," he said huskily. "Dhruv will stay with my parents those ten days. He loves spending time in the senior community since he's pampered by so many grandpas and grandmas. And you...just pack our handcuffs and be prepared to order a lot of take-out food."
The End.

CHAPTER 1
Rana rushed inside his parents' house with worry churning in his stomach.
The first person he saw was his mother. And soon his worry turned into relief, and then anger.
"Hello, Ma," he called out to her.
His mother who was supposedly too sick to even talk, was sitting in his childhood home, sipping tea with his father and cousin.
As soon as she saw him, an expression of guilt formed on her face.
"Rana, welcome back home. I haven't seen you for a while," she said softly with a smile.
"I visited you, just a week ago, Ma. What's going on? I had to cut short my trip because I got a call informing me you were sick," he said in an accusing tone.
Rana's father jumped in right away and answered on behalf of his wife."Well, she is sick. Sick of you and your reputation. We all are!"
Rana pinched the bridge of his nose as a headache began to form. "Dad, please don't start again. I've had a hellishly long flight since I couldn't find any direct flights in the last minute," he said tiredly.
And before his father could retort or say anything, his mother spoke up.
"Rana, come sit here for a minute. We have something important to discuss with you."
Unable to ever say no to his soft spoken, petite mother, Rana sat on a sofa, next to his cousin Rahul, who was a frequent visitor to his parents' house. His cousin and his father were both doctors who ran the Bugati family owned hospital chain.
Most of the males and females in Rana's father's family were doctors. And some of them, including his father were quite active in politics.
Rana was the only one who hadn't walked the same career path as the rest of his family members. His father had never let him forget that fact.
"What is it, Ma? Why did you make me rush home under false pretenses? You've never resorted to such tactics before. Did someone make you do it?" Rana asked, throwing a meaningful glance towards his glowering father.
"Rana," his mother said gently, trying to maintain peace between father and son. "I'm sorry for making you cut short your trip. But we had to let you know something in person."
"What is it?" he asked.
"We have received an excellent proposal for you."
Rana frowned."What do mean proposal, Ma? I hope you are not talking about a marriage proposal."
Rana's father jumped right in at that. "What other kind of proposal would you ever receive? It's not like you are a doctor or even interested in taking part in our businesses or politics—"
"Ashok, please..." Rana's mother interrupted her husband, before the conversation turned into another yelling match.
Both father and son glared at each other with matching scowls, but remained quiet because of the woman they both respected and loved.
Before Rana was born, his mother had been a top-notch gynecologist. But when Rana was born with a few health complications, she had given up her career to take care of him full-time. And later during his teens when he out-grew his severe food allergies and lung problems, she dedicated herself to running various charitable organizations.
Rana was quite close to his mother because she had always been there during his childhood, taking care of him, listening to him and encouraging him with whatever he wanted to do.
"Yes, it is a marriage proposal," she said. And at Rana's frown, she continued beseechingly. "It's simply a proposal, Rana. There is no pressure to accept. We just thought since we know the family already, you might think about it."
"I know the girl? Who is it?" Rana asked.
"Before I tell you who it is, I would like to first ask if you are okay about the fact that she was engaged to someone else for a while. They broke up a few months ago," she said.
"Why should that fact bother me or anyone to that matter?" Rana asked with a frown.
His mother smiled. "I knew it wouldn't bother you."
"Whom are you talking about, Ma?" Rana asked, getting both curious and impatient.
"Well, dad and I felt that you are both well-suited to one another. I know you would enjoy having a life partner who is independent and driven like you. And she has started her own company from the past three years and is looking for a partner who would support her in every way."
"I'm sure she'd be more than happy with my monthly checks deposited in her bank as allowances," Rana said drily.
"She doesn't need your money, you idiot," Rana's father snapped. "If we weren't in a desperate need to save your useless life from Sudharshan Reddy's threats,, I would never think of tying that innocent, girl's life with yours. She doesn't deserve a womanizer like you."
"There is no threat to my life. Sudharshan Reddy and his daughter are simply drama queens with their theatric displays," Rana stated irritably, ignoring the womanizer part of the comment.
"Well, I don't want to take chances. Once you
are married off safely, they'll leave you alone," Rana's father stated.
Rana didn't want to be treated like a little boy who needed protection. "I think I am perfectly capable of managing my life without your assistance or advice. I already have enough security during—"
"It was my idea, Rana," his mother stated softly, shocking him. She smiled, but Rana could see the worry in her eyes. "Please, for my sake, just promise me that you'll come along with us this evening. It's only a casual meeting."
Sighing in defeat, Rana said, "Fine. I'll join you this evening. And who is this paragon of innocence and womanhood who will save me from danger?"
"Srishti Shah," his mother replied with a hopeful smile.
Hearing that name, Rana's mind howled and rebelled.
Srishti freaking Shah! What the everlasting hell!
But he maintained a calm look on his face."What time are we going to meet her?"
"Around five. The Shahs are hosting their grandson's first birthday party this evening. So it won't be an awkward meeting for you both. You can just connect casually during the party as old friends," his mother said eagerly.
Rana hoped to god, his mother wasn't dreaming of having Srishti as her daughter-in-law or as the mother of her grandchildren. Because he was quite sure she would be extremely disappointed.
Because no way he would let that harpy get anywhere close to him.
He looked at his father, who was still glowering in silence, ready to erupt at the slightest provocation.
"Rahul, come join me upstairs," Rana told his cousin before he headed towards his room.
Rahul was Rana's father's were brothers, and since both were of the same age, they grew up being quite close to one another. They had gone to the same boarding school from the age of fourteen and stayed together until they both graduated from the same medical college.
But unlike Rahul, Rana wasn't a doctor. He gave up his medical degree to pursue what he was really passionate about.
