  Healing Her Racy Doctors

ER nurse and submissive Loreen Newhouse has admired surgeons and Doms Adam Eastman and Travis Randall from afar for years, but she hasn’t dated since her fiancé was killed four years earlier.

Adam lost his fiancée to a car bomb three years earlier when he and Travis served together in Doctors Without Borders. Travis is afraid to give away his heart after watching the pain that Adam went through.

When a chance encounter leads to Adam and Travis pursuing a Dom/sub relationship with Loreen, all three believe they are on the road to healing. Until an ER victim who too closely resembles Adam’s fiancé is brought in on the anniversary of her death, and Adam bolts without telling Travis or Loreen where he’s gone.

Can Loreen overcome her own past grief and help Adam and Travis heal from their loss, or has she lost them both forever?

  Chapter One

Loreen Newhouse held the straw to Mindy McAllister’s lips. “Sip it slowly, hon. The docs are almost done. You’re doing great.”

The teen’s pupils were so dilated that her eyes looked as if they had no color at all. They were just black. “Will my leg be okay?”

Her voice shook, and Loreen forced a smile to her face, despite the fact she’d been awake almost thirty-six hours and was exhausted. Mindy had been one of four teens injured in a bad accident on US 231 when their car skidded off the road during the tornado warning last night. Thankfully, alcohol had not been involved, as it usually was when they got teens in the ER on a Friday or Saturday night. They’d simply been surprised by the heavy rain and hail, and the driver, a seventeen-year-old named Brandon, had lost control.

Loreen’s scheduled shift had been over for several hours, but she’d stayed to help, as had both doctors at Mindy’s bedside.

“It’s a fracture,” said Adam Eastman, “It will heal in six to eight weeks, but probably closer to eight. The gashes will heal in a few weeks if you don’t get them infected.”

Loreen shot him a warning look but he gave her no more than a quick glance that she couldn’t interpret. She’d never been able to interpret his glances. Doctor Eastman was the head trauma surgeon at Memorial Hospital and he was a top-notch doctor, but his bedside manner was as cold as Racy, Indiana in January.

He was also drop-dead gorgeous, with brown hair that he wore longer than most men did these days, and big hazel eyes that Loreen could get lost in. He was currently stitching up the multiple gashes in Mindy’s left leg, while hottie doctor number two, Travis Randall, finished up the temporary cast. Mindy would have to wear a plaster one on her right calf through most of the summer.

“Okay.” Mindy counted on her fingers. “School won’t be back in yet, but marching season will have started. Will I be able to march in camp? We start the first week in August.”

“Not sure yet,” said Travis. “We’ll have to see as the summer progresses.”

Mindy frowned then turned her gaze back toward Loreen. “Can I have more water?”

Loreen held the cup to her lips again. “You’ll be a senior this year, right?”

Mindy nodded, her eyes losing some of the fear they’d held earlier. She wasn’t in any pain from all the meds they’d given her so they could cast her leg and sew up the cuts from broken glass, but she was still awake. Loreen wasn’t surprised by that. She’d been an ER nurse since graduating from nursing school at IU thirteen years earlier. Pa
tients didn’t always fall asleep with pain meds on board, especially hyper teens.

Mindy had been in the back seat, without a seatbelt, and when the car rolled, she’d taken the brunt of the injuries. She was lucky all she’d broken was a tibia. Loreen knew her and the other kids, and they were part of the good crowd, as she called them. Never in serious trouble, and not known partiers.

“All done,” said Travis, smiling at his patient. Mindy blushed, not that Loreen could blame her. Travis’s dark hair and dark eyes gave him an exotic look, and his smile could light up the entire ER. His bedside manner was considerably more gracious than Adam’s. “This is only temporary. You need to come to the office in a couple of days and we’ll put on a permanent one.”

“Okay.” Mindy couldn’t look happier about the possibility of seeing Doctor Randall again, and Loreen bit back a laugh. Oh, to be young and infatuated once more.

Adam straightened up as well, but didn’t smile at his patient. He rarely smiled at anyone these days. Loreen remembered a time when he did smile, but that was before both men had returned from working with Doctors Without Borders in Iraq. “You need to come back to the surgical clinic as well in one week to have the sutures removed, but some of these cuts might still need dressings on them for a while after that.”

Mindy nodded again, but Adam didn’t get a smile or a response from her. Loreen was used to Adam’s dark mood, as were most of the staff, but right now Mindy looked at him the same way she’d eye a teacher she didn’t care for.

Travis surveyed the mess of packaging and bloody gauze on the small cart. “Want some help cleaning this up?”

Loreen smiled and shook her head. “No, but thanks. Get out of here. You two must be exhausted.”

“You worked overtime as well,” said Adam, taking off his gloves and tossing them in the hazardous waste container. That surprised her. She didn’t know he paid any attention to her usual hours. “You must be tired, too.

“I’ll just get Mindy settled and then I’ll be out of here as well.”

“All right.” He eyed the cart again then glanced into her eyes with an expression that was almost thoughtful. Since it was the most emotion he’d shown her in two years, heat rose to her face. She averted her gaze before he could say anything else in front of Mindy, who was no doubt watching the two carefully by now. Loreen had three teen nieces. No one could smell raging hormones as well as a teenage girl, even if they didn’t always understand the emotion.

“How long have you worked here?” asked Mindy after Travis and Adam left the room.

  “Thirteen years.”

“And how long have they worked here?”

“The doctors?” She knew who Mindy meant.

  “Yes.”

Loreen kept her eyes on the cart in front of her as she cleaned up. “Let’s see…Doctor Eastman has been here since 2004 and Doctor Randall since 2008. But both left for a while to work in Iraq with Doctors Without Borders.” Adam had left and returned more than once over the course of eight years. Both men had returned for good two years ago.

  “Really? That’s cool.”

Loreen finally made eye contact. “You sound surprised.”

“Well, only about Doctor Eastman. He’s too mean to be a humanitarian.”

Loreen bit back a smile as she scooped up the rest of the trash. “He’s really not mean at all. He’s just very serious about his work. I’ll send your parents back in now. We’re still waiting on a bed for you upstairs. They’re going to keep you for a day just to watch your leg for swelling, and then they’ll send you home.”

“Do they do that with everyone who breaks a leg?” The fear was back in her voice.

  “Absolutely.”

Once Loreen had finally clocked out and grabbed her bag from the locker room, she walked outside and breathed in the clean scent of a gorgeous early June morning. She was off for an entire week, and she planned to sleep for most of it. She was bone tired, and getting too old for this double-shift crap.

Racy wasn’t a big city like Indianapolis, so when their tiny three-hundred-bed hospital got slammed with a true emergency, there were only so many nurses to call in for extra help. She didn’t mind working over on most days, but she couldn’t help wondering how she’d do this in ten years. Or twenty, for that matter.

“You’re only thirty-five,” she muttered, crossing the employee parking lot. Her car was in sight. A short ten-minute ride home to Lilac Way and she’d be inside her condo and could then sleep until Tuesday, at least. And she’d turn off her cell phone. “You have years ahead of you yet.”

“Talking to yourself? That’s a sign of insanity, you know.”

She whirled to face Travis, smiling and slightly embarrassed that he’d heard her, only to raise her brows in surprise when she realized Adam was next to him. “It’s also a sign of intelligence.”

Travis laughed, and the sound was clear and sweet, like early morning birdsong. If she had that sound and his looks to come home to, she might never sleep. “That only means you’re one of the smart nuts.”

“I think we all are, working this much.”

Adam frowned. “I wasn’t going to let Mac sew that kid up. He wouldn’t give a shit that she’s a seventeen-year-old girl who will now have scars all over both her legs.”

Loreen stopped walking and gave him a thoughtful look. Mac was short for Michael Delong, an ER resident who sutured like a first grader trying to cross stitch with twine. But it wasn’t his assessment of Mac’s lousy skills that stopped her. There was something poignant and incredibly sad about the words he’d just said, as if Mindy’s worry about how her legs would look for the rest of her life was personal to him.

“That’s a very sensitive thing to say, for a trauma surgeon.” She’d never had any luck at attempting humor with Adam, but she was beyond tired right now and didn’t think. The words just came out.

She almost fainted when the corners of his mouth turned up. “Touché. I had that coming.”

“No, the quip about your specialty was a joke. But I really did mean that it was thoughtful of you to realize she’d be more upset about the scars than the fracture.”

His gaze traveled over her sloppy ponytail and wrinkled scrubs, no doubt assessing how terrible she looked right now. Not that she ever looked ready for a charity ball at work, but at that moment she wished that she didn’t look like she’d been up for so long. “You were good with her. She was really scared and you calmed her right down.”

“You really did,” said Travis. “You were great with all four of the kids in that accident. You have a way of putting people at ease, even when they come in really freaked out.”

Since she couldn’t remember either of them giving her a compliment before, she stared at both of them, wondering if perhaps she was already home sleeping and this was a dream. Loreen swallowed hard. “Thank you. I have three nieces close to their age. All I kept thinking was that it could have been them, so I stayed to help.”

Adam nodded. “Yeah. I get that. We saw a lot of horrible shit happen to kids that age in Iraq, so we didn’t mind staying, either. Plus, we’re both off for a week now.”

“Really? Me, too. Think the place will fall apart without us?”

Travis smiled and shook his head. “Karen won’t let that happen.” Karen McCall was the ER nurse manager, and she had no qualms about working double and even triple shifts herself if needed. She ran circles around all of them, and everyone loved and respected her, even if they were jealous of her stamina.

“So how did you both get a week off at the same time?”

  Adam shrugged. “Pure coincidence.”

She knew the two had been together in Iraq for two years, but wasn’t sure if they were good friends now outside the hospital. She knew next to nothing about their personal lives. No one seemed to. Or if they did, they were very closed-mouthed about it.

“We should run away to a tropical island,” said Travis. “Someplace without cell phones or Internet, where no
one can find us.”

“I’m in,” she said, laughing. “After I sleep, of course.”

Travis winked at her. “Sleep on the plane.”

“Oh, good idea. Okay. Where should we go? Which island is farthest from Racy?”

Adam actually smiled, and Loreen resisted the urge to pinch herself. If she wasn’t sleeping, she was hallucinating. There was no other explanation for his behavior right now. “Screw the island. I’ll settle for sitting in front of the TV drinking tequila in my underwear for a week straight.”

Travis high-fived him, and Loreen had to avert her gaze because she didn’t want them to see the arousal she was certain showed on her face right now. Images of all three, naked, drinking shots, and both men worshipping her body raced through her mind. What the hell was wrong with this picture? Why couldn’t she control her fantasies in front of them? And why were these two unattached?

Not that she had any room to talk. She hadn’t been on a date in over a year. Her job gave her almost no time to herself, and although there were plenty of single men in Racy, she was so damn tired that all she wanted to do was sleep whenever she had a day off. Exciting life.

  “I think you scared Loreen.”

“What?” Travis’s voice snapped her back to the present. She blinked a few times then finally realized both men were watching her, waiting for her reaction. “Oh…um…sounds good to me. I’ll bring the tequila.”

Jesus H. Christ She had not just said that.

As identical looks of lust and surprise filled their faces, Loreen started walking toward her car again. “Get some sleep, you two. And enjoy your week off.”
