Sam followed her into the NICU, into a private room where Mr. and Mrs. Jameson were waiting with five very special bundles of joy.
“Dr. Napier, Dr. Walker!” Mrs. Jameson exclaimed.
“Good morning,” Mindy said. “Have they photographed the babies yet?”
Mrs. Jameson nodded. “They have. Does that mean we can go?”
“Yes, you can go,” Sam said. “All the babies are healthy; they’ve all passed their car-seat tests with flying colors. You can take them home.”
“So you don’t need them for that press conference that’s gathered downstairs?” Mr. Jameson asked.
“No. You’re not needed for that,” Mindy said. “Take your babies home. It’s been a long time coming.”
Mrs. Jameson’s eyes filled with tears. “Thank you both. And give my thanks to Dr. Hanley and Dr. Chang as well. Actually… I think there are too many people to thank.”
“We know. You don’t need to thank us. It was our pleasure.” Mindy gave Mrs. Jameson a hug.
“Keep us posted with pictures.”
“I will.” Mrs. Jameson was beaming as she and Mr. Jameson loaded five car-seat carriers into a large stroller that had been specially fashioned for them.
Mindy and Sam left the NICU and headed toward the conference room. As they got closer they could hear the buzz of a crowd. Journalists were waiting to hear about West Manhattan Saints’ first quintuplet delivery and she knew they were also waiting to see the quints. Too bad they would be disappointed.
She was about to open the door, but Sam stopped her.
“No, this isn’t happening.”
Mindy was shocked as he grabbed her by the arm and frog-marched her once again into a private room, shutting the door behind him.
“What are you doing?”
“I’m not letting you out of this room until you answer the question I asked you this morning.”
“Sam, aren’t we rushing things?”
He cocked an eyebrow. “How are we rushing things? Three months ago I moved in with you and now you’re telling me that soon I’m going to be a father, so me asking you to marry me is rushing things?”
Mindy sighed. “I was married once before.”
“I swear I won’t cheat on you with your best friend.”
“You’re my best friend.”
“Aye, well, if you become my wife then I won’t have to cheat on you with myself.”
Mindy laughed. “That makes no sense.”
“Well, you not giving me an answer to my proposal makes no sense either.”
She smiled. “Why don’t we have the baby first and then talk marriage.”
He shook his head. “That’s backwards. We have to do this the traditional way.”
“What has been traditional about this?”
“Nothing, but I aim to rectify that.” He took a step toward her and cupped her face in his hands. “I love you, Mindy. That’s never going to change.”
Her heart skipped a beat. “I love you too.”
“So?”
Tears filled her eyes and this time she couldn’t stop them. Usually she was quite good at it, but she was blaming it on the pregnancy hormones. “Yes. I’ll marry you.”
Sam pulled her into his arms and kissed her, making her knees go weak. When he pulled away she moaned in protest.
“You have a press conference, remember?”
“Do we have to go?” she whined.
“You’re the one who said we did.” Sam kissed her again. “Come on. You can do this. I have a feeling with the reputation you’re getting here at West Manhattan Saints that this won’t be the last. I think it’s the first of many.”
Mindy took his hand. “I’m ready.”
And she was. She was ready to face just about anything, as long as she had Sam.
