I've illustrated a story and a book by Rick and tremendously enjoyed the collaborative process, going back and forth by email with Rick, hoping to convey in my paintings, the ambience and feel of Rick's prose.
I'm now illustrating another book by Rick and have at my side the manuscript that he sent me. I'm very much missing the emails and teamwork with Rick that this assignment would have generated. The fact that this book deals with the afterlife adds such poignancy to the process of painting Rick's words. It's such a bittersweet thing to know that it'll be my last collaboration with Rick, though maybe he's even closer now than he was by email.
