Chapter One
Jack
It was a Monday afternoon and I was supposed to be in class, but I wasn’t. Instead, I was lounging on my bed, a skein of blonde hair on the pillow beside me. It was only weeks since that hair had belonged to a stranger, a girl in the library that I’d barely known, but it seemed like a lifetime ago. I reached out and touched Elise’s hair with my fingertips, separating the strands out so they fanned across the pillow in an unbroken silken sweep. I’d never been a fan of blonde hair until I’d met her, preferring the drama of dark hair on pale skin, but I found myself fascinated by its golden tones, evoking butter and hay and daffodils, and many other things besides. Unlike bleached hair, it had depth, and variety, and was never exactly the same color twice.
Elise and I had been at high school together, back in our hometown. I’d barely known her in those days. She was just one of the impossibly pretty, impossibly perfect blonde girls who hung out together, and were acerbically nicknamed ‘the plastics’. But, unbeknown to me, she’d had a secret crush on me. I graduated a year ahead of her and went away to college, and Elise forced herself to suppress her attraction to girls. By coincidence, she went to the same college as me, and we met by chance, three years after we’d last seen each other. I don’t know who was more shocked – Elise to discover that her feelings hadn’t changed, or me to discover that she was far less straight than she’d appeared. And then it didn’t take long for our mutual attraction to reach boiling point.
Elise stirred and mumbled something. I was torn between letting her rest, and snuggling in behind her, kissing the pale gold tip of her shoulder, sliding my hand under her gray jersey tanktop and feeling the warmth of her waist. The comforter was riding low on her hip, revealing the sweet dimples at the base of her spine. Instead of touching her, I contented myself by counting the tiny moles scattered along the length of her arm: 37.
We were supposed to be getting ready to go out – me to college, her to run some errands, but our plans had floated away on the breeze, as the option of more time in bed had swayed us instead. And, in Elise’s case, afternoon sex often led to a little afternoon nap.
In truth, we’d spent almost no time out of bed since we’d been together. But it wasn’t all sex, of course. We talked lots, about anything and everything, far more than we would have if we’d been interrupted by practicalities like locating the new Vietnamese restaurant that I’d been dying to take her to. And, I admitted to myself, it had also been good to be out of the public eye for a while. I didn’t want Christie to see me with someone else so soon after we’d broken up. In such a small town, it’s inevitable that you’ll run into the people that you’re most trying to avoid.
Elise turned onto her back and her arm flew out to the side, bumping against my shoulder. Her eyelashes fluttered open, revealing her huge, bottle-green eyes. She blinked, trying to figure out what had just happened, and where she was, as I waited with bated breath. At last, she turned her head towards me, spontaneously breaking into a smile as her eyes met mine.
“Hi!” she said.
“Hi, sleepy girl,” I replied. She frowned.
“What time is it?”
“A little after four.” Her eyebrows shot up.
“Shit! You’ve missed your class! I’m so sorry. It was because I fell asleep, wasn’t it?”
“No,” I said, stroking the fine golden hairs of her bare arm. “I pretty much decided that college wasn’t happening as soon as I saw you drying your hair in front of the mirror.”
“Really?” she propped herself up on her elbow and looked at me seriously. “Jack, I’m so flattered that you’d choose me over school, but I’m worried that you’re going to fall behind.”
“No, it’s fine, seriously. It’s this really esoteric medieval English class, and they don’t grade it hard. As long as I get through it, it’s fine.”
“Mmm, ok,” she said, but she continued fretting at her fingernails.
“I’ll catch up on the class this evening, while you’re at work. Alyssa will have the notes, so I’ll pick them up from her. I promise.” I ran my finger along the line of her jaw. “So you can stop looking worried now.” She smiled.
“Ok. I’m sorry I fell asleep though. I hate wasting a moment of my time with you.”
“Hey, we’re not on a clock, you know. We’ve got lots of time together.” She turned onto her front and tipped her head forwards, so her hair fell forward like a curtain, obscuring her face.
“I know that sounds silly, but I guess being with you still seems unreal. Like I might wake up and realize that I dreamed the whole thing, and that you’re still no more than a stranger to me.”
“It doesn’t sound silly, but would it be more real if I pinched you?” I pinched her all the way down the side of her body, while she shrieked with laughter and batted me off. I lay on my back beside her and pulled her on top of me. She looked down into my face, sucking her lips in. I was getting to know her well enough to understand that a question was imminent. I waited.
“Is this weird?” she said at last.
“That you wanted to be with me for a long time?” She nodded.
“Yes – not just wanted to be with you, but had a giant, embarrassing crush on you.”
“I hadn’t thought about it. You had a crush in your teens, but we’re grown up now, and we’ve come together as adults, and it just happens that you like me again, after forgetting about me for a while, right?”
“Yes,” she said, in relief. “That’s exactly it.” Her expression turned playful. “I’m sure it’s not doing your ego any damage though.” I was silent for a moment, thinking.
“I don’t know. If anything, it’s the opposite. Maybe you have this idealized impression of me, and when you get to know the real me, you’ll be sorely disappointed.” She propped her chin on her hand.
“Well, that was one of my concerns when we got together, but so far you’re holding up well.” I gasped in mock outrage.
“Oh my god! You’re unbelievable!” I flipped her over and tickled her belly. She tried to snatch my hands away, but I managed to catch both her wrists in one hand and hold them above her head while I continued to tickle her. She wriggled and squirmed, and her tanktop got bunched up, revealing the pale undersides of her breasts. It didn’t take much more effort to push it all the way up, until it was just below her chin. She stopped struggling and her eyes became soft, pupils dilated. I ran my hand over her breasts, tracing two perfect mounds and the hardening peaks of her nipples. Her lips parted as she looked at me expectantly. I relinquished my hold on her wrists, just long enough to lift her tanktop up and ease it over her head, before I caught them up again. I nudged her thighs apart with my knees, and pinned her there, perfectly naked, with the weight of my body.
“Now that I’ve got you where I want you, I think I’ll punish you for your rudeness,” I said.
&nb
sp; “What did you have in mind?” she asked, her voice a little strained.
“Well, I might just hold you here and stare at you until you get really uncomfortable.” Which I could have done easily. She was so damn perfect that I could’ve looked at her forever.
“That would be a waste when you could just fuck me instead,” she said sweetly. I brought my mouth down to her neck and gave it a nip, and then another and another, from her jaw, all the way down to her collarbone. She responded with little gasps. I loved that it was so easy to turn her on, that the slightest touch made her shivery and hungry for more. I drew a nipple into my mouth and sucked it, feeling it swelling and hardening under my tongue. I did the same with the other one, and she strained towards me, trying to get me to take more of her breast into my mouth. But she couldn't move; I had her captive on the bed. I drew back and looked down at her again.
“Do you want me to fuck you now?” I whispered.
“Yes,” she said, green eyes open wide.
“Yes what?” She frowned, uncomprehending. “Yes what?” I prompted. She bit her lip, blinking rapidly, struggling against her instincts.
“Yes please,” she said at last in an undertone, and a fire ignited in my belly. I reached down between her thighs, my fingertips instantly slick with her wetness. She cried out and her pelvis jerked.
“So sensitive?” I breathed. She made a mmm sound. I looked into her eyes again, fascinated. When Elise was very turned on, a curious light came into her eyes, her irises seeming to burst with stars, the color shifting constantly. It was like watching a firework show in miniature. I teased her for a while, caressing her inner thighs, her delicate labia, touching her anywhere but where she most wanted me to. She was struggling authentically, and, while my wrist was tiring from holding her still, it was very sexy for me. At last, when I couldn't hold back any longer, I slid three fingers inside her. She sucked in air, staying silent until they went all the way to the knuckles, and withdrew, almost all the way out.
“Oh god,” she muttered. Her eyes became pale green, and then almost black as the pupil flooded the iris. Her lids fluttered shut.
“Keep looking at me,” I said, and she opened them again. I moved in and out of her, so slick and slippery and tight around my fingers. Her breath began to come in pants, and I moved faster, giving her the depth and speed she was craving. She moved her pelvis, urging me on, and I fucked her more roughly, my knuckles a bruising pressure at her entrance. She was already close to coming and she looked at me helplessly, hating being so exposed. Her vulnerability was delicious. I moved faster and faster, and when my rhythm hit her sweet spot, she exploded with the uninhibited screams that never failed to surprise me. Moving myself to the side, I ground my clit on her thigh, until I came seconds later, my hand still buried inside her.
“That was amazing,” she said, when we were snuggled up, the comforter pulled on top of us.
“It was,” I murmured, running a finger over her hipbone. “It just gets better every time. Who would’ve thought we were ever strangers?”
“Can you remember the first time you ever saw me – or noticed me?” she asked. I'd thought about this before, turning my vague memories of her over in my mind. They were little fragments, mixed up with my recollections of the rest of her girly clique. I recalled her leaning into her locker, her short pleated skirt lifting a little at the back, and me thinking as I walked past that it was a shame she was so conformist, because she could be a really sexy girl. But maybe that hadn't been her at all; maybe it was one of her friends instead.
“Was it you who slapped a guy across the face in the canteen that day?” I asked. She laughed.
“No, it was Ashley, but I sure wish it had been me. That guy was always a dick to us, making out we were dumb. I think on that day, he’d made one blonde joke too many, and Ashley finally snapped.”
“That's awesome! I remember being very curious about what happened.” I turned over a few more memories, feeling cheated somehow that my first impressions were so diluted and confused. “Wait, you were prom queen, right? And that really arrogant guy, the one with the hair – what was his name? – Was your date?” Elise laughed.
“No, that wasn't me either, it was Rachel. And the guy with the hair was Chad, and the rest of us all hated him too. But I think that was the prom where you turned up in a tux with Clarice. I was insanely jealous, and ignored my date all night in favor of glaring at the two of you!” It was my turn to laugh.
“All that passion and I never noticed a thing!”
“I’m not surprised. You seemed totally wrapped up in her, as my knotted stomach kept reminding me.” I lifted her hand and kissed it.
“I'm sorry I caused you all of that pain. It kind of makes it worse that I was so oblivious to it.”
“Ah, it was my fault. I should have had the guts to slip that note in your locker.”
“I probably would have been so floored, I’d have thought it was some kids pulling a prank.” Elise squeezed my fingers.
“It just wasn't our destiny to be together in high school,” she said.
“Hey, you did track. I remember a girl walking on stage during one of our high school presentations to collect a really cool award. She stumbled on the steps, but she looked so cute that she got a round of applause. Could that have been you?”
“Yes, that was me!” Elise exclaimed with a grin.
“I remember being impressed by how muscly your legs were in your high heels, and liking the way your ponytail was swinging from side to side.” Elise’s face lit up, and I suddenly understood how hard the imbalance in our recollections was for her. “Maybe if we went back home together one day, it would help to jog my memory. I mean, I go back pretty often to visit my family – ” I said. Elise’s features tightened.
“Perhaps one day, far into the future. I just don't think I'll be ready to see my hometown again, any time soon.”
“No, of course. I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to push you. I guess I wasn’t thinking.”
“It’s fine, really, relax.” Her face remained tense. I kissed her, but her mouth was less responsive than usual. I broke away.
“I am sorry. I’m such an insensitive oaf sometimes.”
“No, silly, it’s not that.” Sighing, she turned onto her front and stretched her arms in front of her so they fell into the shaft of sunlight coming through the window. “It’s just that one negative thought has a habit of leading to another, and I was reminded that I have to be in work in – exactly one and a half hours,” she said.
“Being at work sucks, of course, but…?” She groaned.
“I can’t skate. I really can’t. They have me doing the entire shift on skates now, and I’m a liability. It’s pure luck that I haven’t spilled a customer’s order over them yet.”
“But you’ll get better. It just takes practice.”
“I can see that, but I don’t have time to get better. Another shift like the last one, when I was doing everything in slow motion, making sure I always had a hand free to grab onto something if I started to wobble, and I’ll be out!” I failed to suppress a giggle. “Hey! It’s not funny!”
“I’m sorry. I’m not laughing because you’re having a hard time. It’s just a really cute image of you serving customers at half-speed, and probably looking really nervous!” She scowled and slapped my arm, but soon she was laughing too.
“I know I’ll look back on this one day and see how funny it is,” she said. “But right now, it’s just really stressful.
“I should’ve taken you out to practice more,” I said. “It’s my fault for not making the effort.”
“No, that one session you gave me. It was – ” She paused and stared up at the ceiling for inspiration. “Life-changing.”
“Same here,” I said, replaying in my mind the incredible first time we’d kissed, while I was apparently teaching her to skate. It was like a diamond in my memory, prismatic, glittering into the past, the future, and the present moment. I leaned in clo
se, and the world swam away on our kisses.
*
After Elise headed to work, I was left to my guilt at not having insisted we go out and practice skating. The trouble was, I just couldn’t force myself out of bed when we were together. One of my favorite poems, The Sun Rising, is all about how a couple’s bed is the whole world, and that’s how I felt when we were together. As the poet had articulated 400 years earlier, time was no longer linear, but had become prismatic. And it was the first time I’d felt like that. With my exes, I’d been full of energy after sex, eager to get up and do things, but with Elise, it was different. Being with her made me as languid and satisfied as a cat in the sun. Now seemed more important than anything that could happen in the future. And in a way, it was. But there were a couple of other things that were a little pressing. Such as school. Just one more day, I kept telling myself. Then I’ll get back to studying. But there was Elise, lying on my bed, looking more flawless than I could have imagined a person could look, telling me a funny story, or asking me a question that made me see myself, or the world around me in a different way. And all my obligations turned to dust.
I pulled out my phone and located Alyssa’s number, crossing my fingers that she’d made class notes on her laptop and could email them to me. The class was more important than I’d made out to Elise, and if I didn’t pass with a strong grade, it would drag my overall grade down.
“Yeah, of course I made notes on my laptop. You think I know how to operate a pen?” Alyssa replied to my enquiry. “But why don’t you just come over, and I can tell you all about the class, and we can hang out? I feel like I haven’t seen your face in months!” I laughed.
“Dude, it’s been like three weeks max, which I admit is probably the longest time we’ve gone without seeing each other. And I really apologize for that. It’s my bad.”
“Don’t worry. I know you’ve been caught in a honey trap.”
