The Love Potion (Werewolf High Book 5) Page 14

“Sorry,” I told him. “I’m sure you can win them back.”

He shrugged and got to his feet. “And it’s about time I graced them with my presence. Who’s ready for dinner?”

I glanced over at Sam, and he gave me a tiny nod. There was a conversation we needed to have now that the potion’s effects were over. We’d put it off for too long already.

  “I could eat,” Althea said.

Nikolai turned his back on her and walked away. She glanced at Tennyson, and he looked away too.

You need to forgive her, I told him. Surely, you can understand why she did it.

  She had no right.

I shook my head. She knows that. She’s sorry. If you talk to her about it now, then next time she has a problem, she’ll know she can come to you about it instead of turning to the black arts.

  He sighed. Fine.

He got up to join Althea, and her face broke into a smile. She ducked her head so that her hair fell across her face. How she’d managed to get her hair back to that shiny perfection after having it covered in tar, I’d never know. I was fairly sure I’d have to shave my head to get the tar out.

I tucked my knees up inside Tennyson’s hoodie, which I was still wearing, and watched them leave. I hadn’t wanted to go back to the Red House. I didn’t want to be around Katie, not while I was still so suspicious of her. Something about the way Tennyson had been strung up had been similar to what I’d told her about him restraining me on the full moon. Nobody else outside the pack had known that, and all these little details had started to convince me that she wasn’t on my side.

“So,” I said to Sam when we were finally alone.

“So,” he said, smiling at me. “Walk?”

I nodded and got to my feet. With the workers hammering and chatting to each other while they were installing the new windows, it wasn’t exactly a romantic setting.

He laughed at me as we made our way around the house. Althea’s feet were tiny, so I’d had to borrow shoes from Sam, and his sneakers were about 20 sizes too big for me.

“I feel like a kangaroo,” I told him as he held open the gate to the garden behind the house.

“You look like a deep-sea diver,” he said, watching the way I was picking my feet up super-high so I wouldn’t trip over the ends of the shoes.

“How do you live with such enormous feet?” I asked him.

He laughed and caught my hand. “I don’t know. I just make it work, somehow.”

I stopped walking and turned to look up at him. The moment turned serious, and if I hadn’t been wearing those massive shoes, I would have turned and run. Sam’s face was so earnest, so full of feeling, and something about that didn’t make sense to me. But I loved him. He was my best friend. I’d loved him as far back as I could remember.

This was everything I wanted. It was right.

“Are we really doing this?” he asked softly.

I nodded, and he leaned in and kissed me.

He kissed me, and I felt cold.
