Ran (Book 1): Apocalyptica Page 23

by Joshua Guess

We didn’t know then what troubles we’d face down the road, though recent experience gave us much in the way of expectations. What we did know, what had been burned into us, was the fragility of what we had in that room. Any of us could die without warning or mercy.

The world had always been that way. It was just more obvious now. The difference was of degree, not kind. What was lost was the misguided idea that any of us were safe. The causes were different—death by random zombie attack instead of distracted driver—but the fundamental truth remained. You could go at any time. No word of warning.

So you had to make sure every moment had the life squeezed out of it, and that every chance for joy and love was taken. We knew, deep in our bones, that every gathering like this could be our last. In the face of it, there was really only one option.

In life, as in cards, you had to pull yourself together and deal.
