“I’m not sure. I think I went psychotic on Yamamuro’s escort and he dumped me here. Who cares? How is she, Vince?”

  Vince shrugged. “Uh, well…”

“What? What’s wrong, damn it,” Nikki snapped, grabbing Vince by the shoulders and shaking him.

“Calm down, Niko. A lot has happened since you revived her, and I’ll let her tell you. First, how are you? Kill anybody yet?”

“I’ll kill you if you don’t tell me what’s wrong,” Nikki snapped, gripping Vince’s arm like a vice.

“Fine. If you want me to waste time telling you while Lilah stands outside, vulnerable and defenseless, then I will.”

Nikki pulled at her hair with one hand and beat her forehead with the other. “No, no, no!” An irrational wave of paranoia washed over her and she shoved Vince away so hard that he flew into solid rock.

Vince scowled and dusted himself off. Ignoring the fact his sister had just attacked him, he continued in a placid voice, “I can’t leave her out there to long, sis. But I can’t bring her in here if you’re ballistic on me.”

“I know,” Nikki said, blinking away the rage. “There’s a pit over there that I can use. It’s about 140 feet deep, so Lilah will be safe and I can talk to her without hurting her.”

“That’s a good idea, Niko,” Vince said, relieved at Nikki’s moment of clarity. “Do you need me to fly you down?”

“No, it’s okay,” Nikki said, and ran at vampire speed toward the pit.

Vince heard her hit the bottom with a thud and waited until Nikki shouted that she was all right. Then he took off at inhuman speed for Lilah.

A few minutes later, Lilah stood at the opening to the bottomless pit and squinted to see Nikki at the bottom of it. “Nikki. Are you all right?”

“Yes, I’m fine. I’m so excited to see you, Lilah. But you shouldn’t have come looking for me. It’s not safe.”

“I wish I could say I was looking for you, Nikki. But they were forcing me into seclusion until I learn how to fly.”

What the hell? I know I’m crazy but that didn’t make sense to me, Nikki thought to herself. If only I could see her.

Lilah heard her thoughts and before Vince could grab her, she jumped into the pit and managed to pull the air up under her, barely softening the blow as she hit the ground.

Shocked by the sudden smell of an unknown vampire, Nikki blinked back into senselessness and bared her fangs. “Who are you?” She reached back for her weapon, but it wasn’t there. She didn’t remember that it had been taken away from her before she was taken to Switzerland. Infuriated even more, she shoved Lilah against the rock wall.

“Nikki, stop! It’s me. It’s Lilah,” she screamed.

“Lilah, are you all right?” Vince called from above. He didn’t wait for an answer; he soared down on a stream of air. Just as he landed, Nikki lunged for Lilah’s neck. Vince grabbed his sister and pinned her arms down at her side.

“Harlot. Tell your dog to get off me or I’ll kill you both,” Nikki screamed, thrashing about to break free.

Lilah could not stop the tears from welling up, but along with the tears came a feral instinct to attack.

Nikki balled her hands into fists and snapped her fangs at her, blood trickling from her punctured lips. Her neck was exposed.

Without thinking, Lilah pounced on Nikki and sunk her fangs into her jugular.

  “That’s enough, Lilah,” Vince demanded.

“No!” she growled and kept drinking, digging her fingers into Nikki’s chest.

At first it was the savage bite of a predator protecting herself, but then as Lilah drank her fill, Nikki began to moan and the sound penetrated her rage. The smell of her skin, the softness of her wavy brown hair, and the feel of her hands on her broad chest, flooded her mind with memories stronger than her bloodlust.

Even newly turned vampires instinctively know how to drink from a person’s vein. The trick that Lilah hadn’t learned yet was how not to drain the donor dry, or drink so much that she felt bloated. Nor was Lilah skilled at retracting her fangs from a vein, and as she started to pull away, she inadvertently nicked her tongue and injected Nikki with her own blood.

Nikki stood still, confused and dazed. Her unfocused eyes looked right through her.

“Whatever you just did, Lilah, keep it up,” Vince encouraged when he felt Nikki calm down.

I don’t know what I did. Lilah felt the tingle of her own blood mixing with Nikki’s and wondered at the excitement of it. Then she had an idea. “Vince, did you give her that blood that you brought down?”

“No, I dropped it when she shoved me. Maybe that’s it, piccolo. The bag’s in my satchel. Reach in and—”

“I think it’s more than that, Vince.” Then she cupped Nikki’s face in her hands, meeting her eyes. “Nikki, drink from me. Do you understand?” It’s all right, darling. Drink from me.

Nikki closed her eyes and she led her mouth to her neck. “Take from me whatever you need, my love.”

Nikki impaled her with her fangs and drank deeply, moaning with need. Vince let her go and Nikki grabbed Lilah, pressing her to her chest and wrapping her arms around her as she continued to drink. Lilah went weak in the knees, but it wasn’t from blood lost, it was from love found. All the memories of their first date, their first kiss, their falling in love, flooded her senses, and she moaned from the sheer joy of it.

Finally sated, Nikki pulled away and blinked her vision into focus. “Lilah? Vince?”

Vince held up his thumb and asked, “How many fingers am I holding up?”

“Don’t try to play me, Vinny,” Nikki replied. “You’re holding up your thumb, which I know that you don’t consider a finger, even though, technically, it is.”

“Yep, she’s back,” Vince chuckled and stepped to the side.

“Lilah, are you all right?” Nikki asked, putting her hands on her hips and pulling her close again.

Lilah nodded, caressing her cheek with her hand as tears welled up in her eyes. “I am now, darling. Everything is all right now.”

“I love you, lovely Lilah Rose,” Nikki said, wiping a tear from her cheek with her thumb.

“I love you so much, Nikki,” Lilah enthused.

Vince looked from one to the other. “Well, uh, I love you both, too. So, how about a threesome?”

  Epilogue

  December 31, 2016

  da Polenta Villa, Zermatt, Switzerland

Lilah’s face shone bright under the multicolored fireworks exploding in the air as Nikki held her close and dipped her low, kissing her hungrily when she brought her back up.

Champagne chilled in an ice bucket as John Legend’s song, “All of Me,” filled the air. Lilah and Nikki sensually swayed to the music, as Vince, hovering just up the mountainside from the balcony, sent up another cluster of fireworks.

“Happy New Year, lovely Lilah Rose,” Nikki said, holding a flute of champagne in her hand, her other hand resting on her hip. She couldn’t seem to keep from touching her.

Lilah picked up her glass and put her hand on her cheek. She couldn’t seem to keep her hands off of her. “Happy New Year, Nikki. I love you.”

“I love you more,” she countered.

“No, I love you more,” she said.

“A toast to our love in the New Year,” Nikki said and clinked her glass with hers.

“I’ll drink to that,” she said with a fanged smile, and brought the flute to her lips. “Um, how do you drink champagne with these things?

“You are so damn cute,” Nikki laughed, and then kissed her fervently before taking her glass and setting both glasses back on the table. She looked up at Vince and nodded, then took Lilah’s hand in her and led her into the villa.

“That’s all right. I’ll just hang out up here… in the clouds,” Vince grumbled as a bird flew up and perched on his shoulder. “With the birds.” He looked down at the village in full party mode. “To hell with the birds, let’s celebrate!”

Irinushka raised her glass of champagne, and hundreds of her lovers and children, followed suit. The opulent ballroom was filled to capacity with immortals, all related to Irinushka in some fashion, and humans, there to offer their life blood, although most of them weren’t aware of it.

“A toast to the New Year and to the resolutions it promises to bring,” Irinushka said with a leer.

  “Here-here!”

Irinushka turned to her second-in-command and smiled. “And to the resolutions already fulfilled. My daughter will be reigning beside me very soon.”

  “And her girlfriend?”

Irinushka sipped her champagne and then laughed. “Everyone needs a pet.”
