His Candlemas Hope Page 19

“What does this mean for me, Lewis? Will…will my life change much? I have become rather set in my old ways. I don’t know if I can deal with change at this point in my life.”

“Oh, I should think it will. Marriage was the best thing that ever happened to me.”

“I wasn’t referring to my impending nuptials. I was referring to my new state as a…”

  “Bastard?” Lewis supplied.

  Gil winced. “In a way. I meant…”

“What will the magic in your life mean for you?”

  “Yes.”

“Precious little, I would think. You can keep ignoring it if you choose to. It’s not as if it’s going to burst out and take over your life. Many blessed with magic choose to go their whole lives without using it. It…well, it has caused me some problems in the past. You will have Hope to guide you…and you will have me. If you do indeed, decide to embrace the Wisdom half of you, I think your father and brother will be able to help you as well. But be warned, Gilbert. This won’t save you from heartbreak. You are not immortal, nor are you free from any other pain that life might decide to deal you. We cannot play God. We cannot save those we love from their fate. In some ways, that is my greatest curse. I can help others…but rarely can I help myself, or those I love. In that way, you are just as human as the rest of us.”

Gilbert chuckled. “Good. To think of all the grief I gave Hope after discovering what she was…the joke…it seems…is on me.”

“Come on, Lucky. You better be there waiting for Hope, or she will be terribly cross with you.”

With a lightened heart, filled with his love for Hope, Gil stood up, and went to meet his destiny.

Hope and Gilbert were married with their family and friends surrounding them. As he gave her the kiss that would seal their union, he felt that same familiar spark that had first ignited between them not so long ago. He had found the other half of his soul—she filled his heart with love, and gave his life purpose. He had decided to add her family name to his own.

“I love you, Hope,” he murmured fervently.

“And I love you…Gilbert Fortescue-Jones, my enchanting earl.”

“What shall we do about the magic in our lives?” he whispered.

“I don’t need that kind of magic anymore, Gil. We have the greatest magic of all—true love. Whatever storms face us, we shall face them together.”

  His wife was right.

No matter what the future held for him…he had Hope, and she made his life complete.
