“What do you think about getting a place together?” he asked, startling me from my thoughts.
I stilled my fingers from tracing the tattoo on his bicep. “Together?” I asked.
“Yes. Together. As a couple. Because that’s what we are.”
I laughed. “Okay, smartass. I know what you meant by ‘together’.” The solar lights had blinked on when the sun went down. I tilted my head to gaze at him under the pale glow. “Are you sure? I mean, we can wait. I’m in no hurry to leave my apartment.”
“I’m sure our PDA grosses Roxanna out.”
I laughed. “A little, but you know she’s mostly just being dramatic about it.”
My friend was caught up in her own whirlwind of dreams coming true. She’d signed her first contract to publish a novel, and when she wasn’t at the security firm, she was at a coffee shop, tapping out a story on her laptop.
“I know.” He kissed the tip of my nose.
The idea of taking this next step with him made my heart bump in my chest. “Okay, let’s do it. It’ll be fun to look for houses.”
“Maybe we’ll find a place in her neighborhood so we’re nearby. So I can still fix things for her when she breaks something,” he said, and I chuckled. His fingers trailed down my backbone on the outside of the knit cover-up dress over my swimsuit. “And in our own place I could do this any time I wanted, anywhere I wanted.” He lifted the hem of the dress and slid his fingers inside the swimsuit bottoms. He lifted my leg and laid it across his waist so his fingers could tease between my legs. His thumb rubbed gentle, small circles and my blood rushed through me in warm waves.
“I like when you do that,” I said, my breathing heavy. My fingers played with the waistband of his gym shorts. “Can I ask you something?”
“Anything.”
“Are you happy?”
He seemed surprised by the question. “Yes. Are you?”
“So much it makes my heart hurt.” It was the truth. I leaned up so we were nose to nose. “We’re in this for the long run, right?”
“Princess, I’ve been in it for the long run ever since the first time I laid eyes on you.” The smile I loved so much tugged at his lips. “Now, I just need to make sure when we get to the ‘I do’ part, you don’t take off running.”
I socked him in the stomach, and he oomphed in response. “Musclehead.”
“Brat.”
“Why don’t you quit talking and make love to me?” We were bathed in the pale light of the moon, the crickets chirping nearby our only company. “Right here.”
He rolled over me, cocooning me with his body, and I fit perfectly in his arms. As if I’d been made just for him, and I believed I had been. I arched my body to mold against his, the heat of his mouth on my neck, my chest, while the stars burned bright in the sky above us.
Loving him was a torrent of emotions that ended with me being more complete than I’d ever been in my life. The hammock slowed our heated touches to slow-swaying caresses.
When he pushed inside of me, so deep and strong, I clung to him, and whispered, “I love you.”
His mouth descended over mine, kissing me as slow and gentle as each thrust of his hips. Every achingly-slow thrust nudged me closer to the edge until I was breathless with the soft, slow release. When his body tensed above mine, I moaned and bit his shoulder, pressing up into him one last time before the light burst in the darkness of my closed eyes.
I shuddered around him, and he lay heavy and spent against me, his skin warm against mine. I could feel every breath in the rise and fall of his chest as his face snuggled into the crook of my neck. My arms held him close, my heartbeat slowed against his heartbeat that still thrummed in his chest.
“I’m not ever letting you go, Princess,” he whispered against my neck before kissing me there.
“I’m not going anywhere,” I promised on a content sigh. “It’s always been us—you’re my happy ending, Leo.”
“I’m going to show you just how happy we can be,” he said as he lowered his lips to mine.
And he did. It wasn’t the fairytale I’d always dreamed of—it was even better.

A word about the author...
Once upon a time, there was a young girl who wrote sappy poetry about every relationship gone wrong. She had her heart broken many times before the man of her dreams stepped off a big Navy ship and swept her off her feet, promising to never hold her shoe obsession against her.
From that day forward, she swore she’d never again write sappy poetry of unrequited love. Instead, a sucker for smooches and happily-ever-afters, Niecey Roy now writes contemporary romance inspired by her sailor’s sexy brown eyes and charming sense of humor.
