by Clare Smith
It was the small voice, almost like an echo of the past, which broke through the emptiness and reminded him of what he had once been. He gave a shuddering sigh and stood, looking at their worried faces. They were all looking at him and he knew each one of them except for the boy who looked so much like his own brothers just before they were dragged away to work and die in Cassiman’s mines. Tears filled his eyes at the memory.
“I can’t, the dragon spirit has left me and won’t be coming back.”
Tingallent stared at him in shock and then that expression turned to one of resolve. Plink’s revelation had stunned him, but the sheer brutality of what the Passonians were going to do had made him more determined than ever. He grabbed the bundle from Rabayan’s arms, tore off the cover and waved the skull under Poddorrin’s nose.
“We have the artefacts and we have this so you will call the dragons back or ten thousand people are going to die and I will not allow that to happen.”
They had the archives too although he hadn’t told them about that.
“Well, Dragon Watcher, what are you going to do?”
Poddorrin looked at the skull and without any effort imagined it joined to a muscular body with wings and brilliant scales which was so real that he could almost touch it. Something in the empty pit inside of him stirred and he thought that perhaps Tingallent was right, perhaps he was the Dragon Watcher and could do this thing.
He managed a weak smile and a nod of his head. “For everyone’s sake I will try.”
