The Brynthwaite Boys - Season One - Part Three Page 25

by Merry Farmer

Instead of falling for his teasing, his brow lifted to the point where he looked like a boy himself, waiting to hear if he would be allowed a taste of pudding.

“So you will do it?” he asked. “You will make me the happiest man in the world?”

“I don’t know about that,” she teased him, stealing a kiss. “But nothing in this world would make me happier than to make you a father.”

He let out a breath of victory and longing, then kissed her with the same fervor he’d shown the first time they had ever made love. His embrace was both possessive and desperate, claiming her and holding onto her for dear life, as if she was the only thing that could save him. The heat that radiated from him went beyond the physical to the very heart of who they both were, as individuals and as one.

“We need to go back to the inn now,” he said on a ragged breath, breaking their kiss but unable to let her go. “And no more French letters. Never again.”

“So it’s to be a child a year then?” she laughed.

“Of course,” he hummed in response. “Two in one year, if we do it right.”

“Have mercy,” she laughed, happy as the waves that rippled along the sea beside them.

“Only if you beg,” he replied, voice dripping with sensuality and mischief.

Yes, they needed to get back to the inn as soon as possible. But the biggest question of all still hung over them.

Jason stood and pulled her to her feet. He clasped her hand and tugged her back toward the inn, but Flossie held her ground. The breeze whipped her hair around her, giving her a sensation of floating, flying, speeding along to whatever precipice they were heading to.

“So, Lady E.,” she said, still holding Jason’s hand, though he stood an arm’s length from her. “Do you want to marry her? Are you willing to do all that will need to be done for the power and prestige that the alliance can offer?”

He looked back at her, fire in his eyes, “Are you? Are you content to be someone’s wife and mother, or do you want to reach for the stars?”

The thought took her breath away. Lover, mother, partner in greatness. If they were willing to charge into a maelstrom of lunacy that could spell their ruin, they could have it all. If they turned their back on all that, they could have enough, they could have each other. But what else?

“Is it worth the risk?” she asked.

“To have the world at our feet?” He arched an eyebrow.

She grinned, the excitement of possibility making her dizzy.

The last light of the setting sun bathed the shore in reds and oranges—the colors of passion—tinted with gold. Above, the stars were just beginning to come out, to begin their nightly reign. Flossie pulsed with excitement. They’d reached the edge. They could either jump or hold back, take on the world or be content with a quiet life. Now was the time to choose.

“So what will it be?” she asked, squeezing his hand.

He tugged her closer, bringing her into the circle of his arms. His eyes were alight with adoration and ambition.

  “Everything.”

  Acknowledgments

Thanks so much to all of my marvelous readers who have encouraged me to write The Brynthwaite Boys. I sometimes feel like I have a very weird imagination, but things like satyriasis and amnesia actually do happen! So why not torture a few characters with them along the way?

Thanks also to my amazing friend, assistant, and editor, but mostly friend, Julia Tague for everything she does to help me out and keep me sane.
