Murder At The Coven: A Witch Cozy Mystery (A Bluebell Knopps Cozy Mystery Book 3) Page 7

by Nancy McGovern

For a moment, Bluebell was very tempted. But the persistent voice in her heart would not still. “No,” she said, shaking her head. “I have to go home.”

“Well, that’s all any of us want in the end, dear,” Gertrude said, taking a sip of her drink. “We want a good stiff drink, and we want to go home.”

“I did have one question, though,” Bluebell said.

Ewan laughed. “One? I think you have a few hundred.”

“Oh, funny. But I’m serious. I had a question.”

“All right, hit me with it,” Mathilda said.

“Why didn’t Sutter want me wandering alone around the house?” Bluebell asked. “What secrets was he hiding?”

Mathilda and Oliver looked at each other. Oliver nodded slightly. With a deep breath, Mathilda turned back towards Bluebell. “Are you sure you want to know?” she asked.

“I do,” Bluebell said. “What was it?”

“He didn’t want you to go in the basement by yourself,” Mathilda said. “He was afraid of what you’d find down there.”

  “What could I possibly find?”

Mathilda and Oliver exchanged looks again. “Bluebell, the thing about knowledge is, once you have it, you can’t undo what you’ve learned. Maybe there was a reason Sutter was trying to shield you.”

“I need to know,” Bluebell said.

“Are you very sure?” Mathilda asked. “You may not like what you find.”

“I want to know anyway,” Bluebell said.

“All right, then.” Mathilda stood up. “Come with me.”

She extended a hand to Bluebell.

Knowing that she was about to change the course of her life, Bluebell took a deep breath. Then, looking into Mathilda’s eyes, she took her hand, and headed to the basement.
