“Who...” Sterre was about to ask who it was when her eyes caught the symbol of a sun rising over a mountain and she knew who it was. “It’s you, you're a spirit?”
“Yes,” Shandria said looking down solemnly at her own dead body.
“How long have you been here?” Sterre asked as tears began to well up in her eyes.
“I do not know for sure,” Shandria said truthfully as she had no idea how many days or years, or even how many decades had passed.
“How did this happen?” Sterre asked as the tears began streaking down her cheeks.
“I was a master paladin in my order,” Shandria said a she sat beside her own corpse. “I came across an ancient pendant in the order storehouses, one that allowed me to control the actions of dragons, and made me impervious to dragon attacks of all sorts. It seemed a blessing to me, I started hunting evil dragons ridding the world of this scourge one vile creature at a time. I did not realize it was also cursed, with every victory the pendant stole some of the dying dragon's life force and making itself stronger. Soon I was doing more, and more dangerous attacks on the dragons, not just single dragons but even groups of dragons would fall to me. I became known as the destroyer to them, they feared me and they ran from me but I chased them down and killed as many as I could find. Then Jove banished all of the dragons here to the five kingdoms, and I had them where I wanted them, all in the same place, all ready for my justice. I came here and slaughtered so many of them, so many that I lost count. I thought I was invulnerable, and I was to anything they threw at me. It was enough when I was fighting the less experienced dragons, but the dragon lords were a different story. One of them lured me here and collapsed the tunnel sealing me in, and here I died. I perished here in this cavern, my only enemy was thirst. They dug in and tried to loot by body once they were sure I had died, but the pendant killed any that tried as it protected my corpse. It did not matter what they sent in to loot me, good creatures, evil creatures, it did not matter the pendant killed them all. They could not get what they wanted so they ended up just sealing me in here. One day a very long time later we felt a presence near us, a presence that was attractive to us. That was you.”
“Why me?” Sterre asked curiously, she was enthralled by every word the spirit uttered.
“The pendant felt your pure soul,” Shandria answered with a kind smile. “A soul that it felt was worthy of it.”
“What could I do with such an item?” Sterre asked softly as she thought of the possibilities.
“You could walk right out of here,” Shandria said seriously. “Once you take the pendant, my soul will be set free and I will finally be able to move on to the afterlife.”
“What if I do not take it?” Sterre asked already knowing the answer.
“Then I will be forced to stay here,” Shandria said as she hung her head and spoke softly. “You will be left to the mercy of the dragon lord. He only has one use for you and you have experienced that already. Once he is no longer amused by you he will do away with you like he has done with countless others.”
Sterre thought for a few moments and decided she was right, the tall man would kill her if he had no use for her. Then an idea came to her and she asked. “You said you could control the dragons with the pendant? Why did you not just make them all fly into a volcano or some other place that would kill them?”
“The pendant can control them but they will never do something that would cause them harm,” Shandria explained. “They will also not give up their horde at your command, as the only thing they cherish as much as their own life is their horde.”
“I'll do it,” Sterre said confidently. “I will take the pendant, and I will leave this place.”
“It is around my neck,” Shandria said without hesitation. “It is hanging on a silver chain and is a piece of onyx carved into the shape of a serpentine dragon.”
Sterre carefully approached the figure in armor, she brought her hands to hover over the polished silver armor of the dead paladin. The word killed played heavy on her as she remembered the story Shandria had told her. She placed her hands on the helmet of the paladin and waited for something very bad to happen, but nothing did as she only felt the cool metal of the helmet under her touch. She carefully pushed the helmet back and pulled it up causing it to slide off of the head of the dead warrior. She expected to find a mummified corpse under the helmet but instead found a beautiful female face that looked like it was just sleeping.
“You look like you are just sleeping,” Sterre said having second thoughts about this. Was she going to kill the woman by removing the pendant?
“No, child I am very dead,” Shandria said as she looked at her own face in death. “The magic of the pendant is preserving, me holding on to me because it cherished me. Take it and set me free.”
Sterre reached a trembling hand out and looped her finger in the silver chain around the dead woman's neck. She pulled on the chain half expecting the woman to open her eyes, but she did not. She pulled until the pendant popped out from under the breastplate of her armor. it was an intricately carved pendant of pure onyx that seemed to catch every ray of light with its many facets. She marveled at the detail of the dragon, it must have been a true master that made the pendant, it was so detailed and beautiful. She gently pulled the chain over the dead paladins head and the moment it left her the body crumbled to ash and dust. The armor slumped down into a pile, and the hands that once grasped the sword tumbled down and the sword fell to the side with a loud clang.
“Thank you,” Shandria said as she began to fade.
Sterre watched the spirit fade into the ether, she felt good that she had helped the paladin gain her peace. She looked at the pendant and she brought it up and over her silky blond hair, the silver chain was cool on her skin and when the pendant touched her chest she felt a jolt of power shock through her. She felt like all of her next actions were out of her control, she scaled the wall back to her tunnel, and she found herself in her own chamber looking down at the girl who washer servant. Katarina as she had come to know her, and she could see the faint outline of her dragon form around her unconscious body as she laid helpless on the floor.
Sterre could hear something in her head, something like a voice, but not as plain as that, more like a compulsion that pushed at her every fiber. She reached down and shook the girl trying to rouse her from her motionless state. She only had to try once and Katarina opened her eyes and looked around with an expression of confusion.
“What happened Sterre?” Katarina asked groggily as she began to get up. She looked into Sterre's eyes and she was stopped dead in her tracks. “You've changed. There is something very different about you.”
“Do you like what you see?” Sterre questioned as she looked at Katarina with a lust creeping up from within as she could feel that the dragon within Katarina would do her bidding. She did not just know it, she could actually feel it, and the feeling was intoxicating.
“I do,” Katarina said and was unable to look away, she wanted nothing more than to be near Sterre, to do anything she commanded.
Sterre could see that she had control of the girl, she could pull the strings and the girl would do anything she wanted her to do. She thought at first she was going to leave this place, but now she was not so sure. Something deep inside of her wanted to rule these creatures, not destroy them like the paladin wanted, but actually rule them. She wanted to make them do her bidding and make them feel helpless like she felt when she was brought here. No she was not going anywhere, she would stay, and soon they would all bow down to her like a queen. Yes, that’s it, she would be….Queen of Dragons.
