  A door opened and a stern-faced physician, still dressed in green garb, walked toward him with brisk steps. The doctor was trailed by a stout nurse.

  Ben stood.

  "Commander Harrow," the doctor said after introducing himself. "The good news first. Your wife will live."

  Ben closed his eyes and sighed with relief. His fists were pumping.

  The doctor waited a few seconds, until Ben was over his emotion. "Now for the bad news. I'm afraid she will remain comatose for the rest of her life. I'm sorry. But she will require constant care."

  Ben stared at him.

  "The projectile had lodged in the stem of her brain" the doctor said. "It's a nine millimeter. We dug it out. You can have it, if you want it."

  "I don’t," Ben said.

  "Very well." The physician went to the desk and scribbled something on a yellow slip of paper. He came and handed it to Ben.

  "This is the number of Dr. Delawney. His hospital here in Fayetteville specializes in cases like yours."

  The doctor frowned for a second. "I'm sorry that there's not more we can do, Commander. If you'll excuse me now." He turned on his heel and left Ben standing.

  …

  Sorry to leave you standing, too, gentle reader. But this story goes on for many more pages and there's just no good cut-off point to conclude this preview.
