She laughed, then hugged me tighter. “A little, yes. But honestly? I kind of feel… I don’t know. Guilty that he has me all flustered, and worried, and running down here to get reassured about us. I feel like I should be over that feeling. For myself, and… for us. I mean, it’s not really fair to you, is it? For my ex to be able to have me so frazzled?”
I shrugged. “You’re not a robot, Fal. I knew when we came into this that you were still getting over your ex, and I accepted that, because almost two years later, my ex still makes my heart race a little, in a fucked up way. It’s normal, babe. It’s only been like four months, Fal. It takes time. But I’m with you, okay?”
“Okay,” she said, smiling as tears glossed her eyes again. “Cause you realize you’re stuck with me now, right?”
I chuckled, then kissed her again. “I can’t think of anybody else I’d rather be stuck with.”
She licked her lips, and I could tell she was trying not to cry by her frantic blinking. “I love you,” she said, lifting her hands to drape over my shoulders.”
“And I love you too.”
Fallon smiled, then glanced around, and her happy expression turned mischievous. She lowered her hands to my belt, and pulled her bottom lip between her teeth. “You remember, that day you dropped me off at the airport, and we talked about… your truck?”
I lifted an eyebrow. “Yeah…”
She grinned. “Well, it’s pretty quiet back here, mostly everybody off at lunch… and we did say anywhere, right?”
“Fallon, are you saying you want to…?”
She nodded. “Uh huh.”
“Out here in the open?”
“Uh huh.”
“Where we could get caught?”
Her eyes sparkled with mischief as she pulled open my buckle. “Uh huh.”
“Well….,” I let out a heavy sigh, and drew away from her. I reached into the back of my truck. “If we’re going to do this… you know what my rule is gonna be, right?”
She grinned as I placed a hard hat on her head, then reached up to drape her arms around my shoulders. “Safety first.”
I nodded.
“Always safety first.”
- six months later –
“You have THREE new messages. First unheard message:…”
“Yo, Fal… listen, it’s Don Juan. Man… okay, so I’m kinda desperate here… how many days were you supposed to be down here checking on your store? I know you’re probably anxious to get back to Sean so y’all can finish working on the lake house, and I know you’re stressed with selling your house and stuff… and you smart as hell sis, so I’ma be up front and tell you that I’m saying all that so you know I’ve been listening to you, right? I know what’s going on in your life and all that, so… maybe that’ll help me out when I ask you this favor. See? I’m telling you full motives up front so you see I’m not trying to get over on you.”
“Hurry it up young man, so I can put you back in your cell.”
“Aiight, man, chill. I’m tryna talk to my sister.”
“You’ve already used three phone calls when you were only supposed to get one.”
“Aiight, I get it. Just let me talk.
Okay, so… listen, Fal. If you’re still in town… I might or might not need you to come pay these people this bail money. I ain’t even really do nothing, you know? I mean… nothing serious… just a little bit of fun with some of Ray’s campaign signs.”
“Two more minutes, Perkins.”
“I mean… it was just like… a mustache, and a gold tooth. Some stunner shades. I might have drawn a dick on his forehead, but man, that ain’t hurting nobody. I mean, why’d he have to stay his ass in Chicago anyway, I thought he was moving? Anyway… I called dad and Auriel, but they’re both tripping, and mom is off in Vegas again, so if you get this, and you’re still in town, help your baby brother out, aiight? Please. I love you sis. Bye.”
“End of message. To delete this message, press… message deleted. Next unheard message:…”
“Hey baby girl, how you doing? This is your father. I want to give you the heads up that you’re probably going to get a call from your little knucklehead brother about some trouble he got into. Don’t worry about it. You enjoy yourself with my future son-in-law, HINT HINT, and don’t concern yourself with your brother. I’ll go get him when he’s learned his lesson. We had a whole plan coordinated, and his silly ass gets caught. What kind of grown man can’t even do a little graffiti without getting caught? And expected me to bail him out! With his dancin’ ass. I thought he had more flexibility on him than that. Hopping and gyrating around a stage, but can’t even get over a fence better than his old man. Anyway, I love you baby girl. Bye.”
“End of message. To delete this message, press… message deleted. Next unheard message:…”
“Um… hi Fallon, this is Auriel… I feel so weird leaving you a message like this, but… girl… Donnie got himself arrested. Apparently, he and your dad were going around town messing up Ray’s alderman campaign posters. Your dad and brother hate him so much, oh my God! Anyway, Donnie called me to bail him out, and I may or may not have cursed him out, because he knows I can’t be involved in scandals like this. But he said he was going to call you, and I know you and Sean are busy looking for a place together, and selling your house, and all of that, so I just wanted you to know that I am going to have somebody go and get him, so you don’t have to worry about it. I’ll talk to you later Fal. Bye.”
“End of message. To delete this message, press… message deleted. There are no more new messages.”
