“What is it, baby?” he asked between kisses.

“I think we need to talk.”

This didn’t make him stop kissing me like I thought it would.

“About what?” he asked as he still continued on.

  “About us,” I informed him.

He immediately stopped as he looked at me. “Okay. What about us?”

I let out a sigh while I looked at the floor.

“Vanessa, talk to me. What about us?”

“John, I have to be honest with you—”

“Honest with me?” he interrupted me. “Okay, what the hell is going on here?”

I sighed since I could see and feel that he was getting angry because his voice changed when he’d asked me this.

“Is there someone else?” he flat-out asked me.

I continued to look at the floor.

He slowly lifted up my chin. “Vanessa, is there someone else?”

  “No, there isn’t,” I lied.

He stared down at me with a very cold look in his eyes. “How come I’m getting the feeling that you’re not telling me the truth?”

I turned slightly away from him.

“Look, if you think I’m seeing someone else, I’m not, even though we agreed that we could openly see other people. And I haven’t been seeing anyone else because I really want us to be a couple — I just didn’t know if you would ever change your mind about it, and it’s obvious that you haven’t.”

I let out a deep sigh. “I just think that this secret relationship isn’t working out. I really don’t wanna be in any secrets with anyone, and was just thinking that if you seriously wanna be in a relationship with someone and not in secret like what we’re doing then I don’t wanna stop you from being in one — you should be able to be in one just like me if I want to.”

He continued to stare at me like he couldn’t believe that I was saying this to him. “Well, it’s obvious to me that you wanna end this — I pretty much saw this coming — you don’t have to make excuses, Vanessa. It’s clear to me that you don’t wanna be in this secret relationship with me anymore. I don’t know what it is that I did to make you feel this way—”

“John, you didn’t do anything,” I interrupted him. “I just feel that this would be the best for both of us. I think you would agree that it would be better to be in an open relationship with someone rather than being in one in secret with someone.”

“But we can be in an open relationship, Vanessa, because to tell you the truth, that’s what I want.”

“But it’s not what I want, John. I have to be honest with you. I just wanna be free this year — being like this is not being free. I’m tired of sneaking around like this. I mean, it was fun in the beginning, but as time went on I just got tired of doing it — I just didn’t say anything to you because I knew that you loved doing it.”

“And I thought you loved doing it, too,” he said as he stared down at the floor. He looked up at me. “Are you telling me the truth that there’s no one else? That you just wanna end this because you don’t want the both of us to be seeing each other in secret when we can be openly seeing other people? You really mean all of this, right?”

  “Yes, John, I do.”

He nodded as he looked back down at the floor. He looked up at me. “Okay. We can end this secret relationship. But if it’s okay with you, I wouldn’t mind getting together to have sex once in a while.”

I sighed. “I don’t know, John. Now that we’re not gonna be seeing each other like this, you can be with who you wanna be with, and I won’t have anything to say about it nor would you have anything to say if I end up being with someone.”

He continued to stare at me as if he had the feeling that I could be seeing someone. “Yeah, that’s true. Well, this has put a damper on my day, but I’ll be okay.”

  “I’m sorry, John.”

He slightly smiled as he walked towards the door; he opened it . . . and then closed it fast! “I wanna ask you something.”

I tensed up! “What is it?”

“Where were you after school yesterday?” he asked me with a cold stare.

I felt myself go into a panic! I started to breathe heavy. “I was at Ava’s,” I lied. “Why?”

He continued to give me a cold stare. “Well, I tried to call you to see if you wanted to come back over my house for some more sex since we were interrupted the day before, but you didn’t answer your phone.”

“Sorry — I must’ve had it off,” I lied again.

He kept his cold stare on me, and then slowly opened the door. “You can leave first like always.”

I slowly walked past him; I didn’t even look at him, but I could feel him staring at me. “Bye.”

He nodded and then shut the door and locked it. He walked in the other direction. “BITCH!” he yelled.

I quickly turned around. I noticed that he’d put his phone in his pocket as he continued to walk so I really didn’t know if he’d called me a bitch or was referring to something or someone on his phone . . . and I didn’t wanna ask. I was also glad that I didn’t ask him if he was the one who was sending me the secret texts because me breaking off this secret relationship obviously had him upset, so the last thing I wanted to do was ask him about it because I didn’t wanna upset him even more. And about his gun? That was out of the question in terms of asking him about. But him asking me where I was after school still had me shaking, and made me believe even more that he suspected that I was over at Brad’s yesterday.

I continued to walk back to the library relieved but at the same time, I felt bad that I’d ended this with him and I wasn’t even sure if Brad was gonna eventually end his relationship with Lisa. I could tell how upset John was that I’d ended it, but I really meant it when I said that I just didn’t wanna be in a secret relationship with him anymore. But now I was still in one with Brad and only him, and I knew now that this one was gonna give a new meaning to the word secret since he was still with Lisa, as well as being one of John’s good friends. I felt bad about doing this, and was taking a gamble in hopes that Brad really meant what he said about wanting to end his relationship with her. The last thing that I wanted this to be was a mistake that I’d ended this with John because we had a chance at being in the open, but I just didn’t feel it with him on that level.

I sat in the library doing homework when a text came into my phone — it was Brad. Hey. I heard about the decision you made. I gasped as I almost jumped up out of my seat! I wanted to scream, but then I calmed myself down. I knew that it was obvious that John had told him. I texted him back. Yeah, I suppose he told you? He replied seconds later. Yeah, he did. He just told me a few minutes ago. He’s upset about it. I sighed because I expected for John to say this to him. I texted him back. Well, this wasn’t an easy decision for me because I didn’t wanna hurt anyone. His reply came in. Don’t worry about it, baby. He’ll be ok. He really likes you and was just saying that he didn’t know if you were telling the truth about there not being someone else. I nodded in response to this because once again, I knew that John would say this to him. I texted him back. Well, he’s right because I wasn’t telling the truth. So please don’t make me regret the decision I made and you know what I mean by that. I waited for his reply; it took almost a minute to come in. Yeah, I know what you mean. I gotta go now. See you later.

I sighed as I put my phone back on my desk. He all the sudden had to go when I told him that he’d better not make me regret my decision — I felt that I already had. I picked up my phone again and texted Ava, and I told her that I wanted to have lunch off campus today because I didn’t wanna see Brad or John at lunch. Minutes later, she texted me back and said that was fine. I honestly didn’t know what the hell I’d gotten myself into, and but had a feeling that I’d already made a mistake.

  CHAPTER 6

Hours later at my house, Ava and I were getting ready to go to Sparkle, which was a teens-only club. But ever since we turned eighteen, we feel now that we’re
a little too old to be going to a teen club, but we’re still teens and still in high school, and have been going there since we were sixteen, and there was rarely a Friday and Saturday night that we missed. Besides, we’re still too young for the twenty-one-and-older clubs, which I’m personally not interested in until I’m that age.

Since Brad told me he would meet me at Sparkle with Marc since Lisa was going to the movies with Natalie, I decided to look super sexy tonight. I decided to wear a sexy black cropped-style cami, my triple-row crystal belt, and my sexy dark-blue, low-rise jeans with a slight flare. I put on my black sandals and my platinum hoop earrings that Brad gave me, and I had my hair up so my earrings could show. “I’m so nervous about seeing Brad at the club tonight — I hope I look sexy enough for him.”

Ava smiled. “I don’t think Brad is gonna complain about the way you look; not too many girls out there can pull off a look like that.”

I smiled. “Thanks, Ava.” I took one last look in the mirror at myself. I grabbed my black quilted clutch. “Come on, let’s go.”

We arrived at Sparkle and we could already see how crowded it was before we even pulled into the parking lot. It was definitely the place for half-dressed girls and hordes of horny boys to have a lot of fun at. I also noticed that Marie Jones, a senior at our school and Natalie’s best friend as well as a friend of ours, was standing at the club’s entrance as if she was waiting for someone. I was also in two classes with her for this semester. “Hey, there’s Marie! What’s she doing standing there?” I asked.

Ava slowed down since she was driving. “I don’t know. She’s obviously here by herself since you said that Brad told you that Lisa and Natalie are going to the movies tonight.”

“Yeah, that’s what he told me,” I said.

Marie approached our car as Ava rolled down her window. “Hey, ladies. What’s up?” she asked.

“Not much. Are you waiting for someone?” Ava asked.

Marie looked both ways as if she was. “Yeah, I’m waiting on a male friend from another school that I met on social media — I hope he gets here soon or I’m gonna go meet up with Natalie and Lisa at the movies.”

“Oh, okay. Well, have a nice night,” Ava said.

“Thanks. You ladies have one as well. It’s already crowded in there as usual, so have fun,” Marie said with a smile.

“We will!” Ava and I both replied with a big smile.

Ava turned into the parking lot.

I continued to look back at Marie as she stood waiting for her friend, as she called him. No more than a minute later, a guy pulled up in a black car with shiny chrome-looking wheels that looked like they cost more than the whole car itself. I kept looking back as Marie talked to this guy — she then got into his car and he pulled off and drove down the street. “Marie’s friend just picked her up,” I told Ava.

She grinned. “Yeah, sure, if that’s what he really is to her.”

I looked at her. “What?! What do you mean by that?”

She grinned as she found a place to park. She turned off the car and pulled down the visor on her windshield and looked in the mirror on it. She applied her lipgloss as she still grinned.

“Ava! Tell me! What’s going on with Marie?”

“Vanessa, if I tell you, you have to promise me that you won’t tell anyone, not even Brad, because I know that he doesn’t know.”

  “Okay, you got my word.”

“Marie is having sex for money,” she nonchalantly informed me.

I gasped! “WHAT?! Ava! STOP LYING! She’s not!”

“She is,” she informed me again with a grin. “You wanted to know, that’s why I told you. She’s been doing it since last year. Even though she’s eighteen, she’s lucky that she hasn’t gotten busted for it, especially when she was underage. I told her that what she’s doing is very dangerous, but she says that she’s careful and won’t go off with a guy she doesn’t trust. She told me that she meets them mainly on social media or here at the club. She said that she really doesn’t go strolling up and down the streets because she doesn’t wanna make it obvious that this is what she’s doing, so she tries to be more discreet about it.”

My mouth hung open — I just couldn’t believe it! “So that’s why she always seems to have so much money and is always showing it off in Accounting. That’s why she’s always late to class or never shows up, and that’s why each time she comes into the store that we work at she drops a grand or more on clothes and other stuff.”

“Yeah, and that’s why Ned the Nerd got busted for stealing money out of the cash register at that game store that one day — he’s paying Marie to have sex with him.”

“SHUT THE FUCK UP, AVA!” I shouted in shock.

She laughed. “I’m for real, Vanessa! Just as real as you ending your secret relationship with John to continue a secret one with Brad!”

“Yeah, I really did!” I said with a grin.

  We laughed.

I got serious for a second as I let out a sigh. “But I still don’t know if I did the right thing.”

She looked at me. “Well, Vanessa, only time will tell that.”

I nodded as I looked around to see if I saw Brad’s car in the lot. “I don’t see Brad here yet; I don’t see his car.”

“If he said he’ll be here, he’ll be here,” she assured me.

Once we got into the club, it was the same as it always was on a Friday night, as the music had it goin’ on and the dance floor was packed with people. Ava and I sat at our usual spot at a small table down on the right side of the disc jockey’s stage. Minutes later, we went out to the floor and danced for a while, and all the while I was really nervous as I wondered if Brad was gonna show up or not.

An hour had passed and I was still waiting for Brad to show. I knew he would’ve told me if he couldn’t make it so I didn’t wanna keep calling him or texting him to see where he was. I continued to look around for him as Ava was out on the floor dancing with a guy that she’d met here a few weeks back.

Ava walked back over to me and sat down. “Still not here, huh?” she asked, and then sipped her drink.

“No,” I replied, and looked down at my watch.

“It’s still early — maybe he did something else first — did he say what time he would be here?”

“No, he didn’t,” I replied with an irritating tone. I looked around the club for him again as I hoped that I wasn’t gonna be stood up because it was possible.

Another forty-five minutes went by and I was out on the dance floor with Ava when I looked at the front entrance. I saw Marc walk in first, and then Brad. I could see how many girls were staring at Brad as he made his way through the club with Marc behind him, and he was so oblivious to all the attention he was receiving from the girls. “He’s here!” I happily said to Ava.

We both walked off the dance floor and walked up to them.

  “Hey, guys!” I said.

“Hey, Vanessa,” Brad said as he hugged me.

Ava and I acknowledged Marc as well.

Brad was looking gorgeous, wearing a black fitted tee with short sleeves with tattoo-print motifs scrolled all over it in a silver and grey print, as well as dark-blue jeans and black sneakers. He had diamond stud earrings in his ears and was smelling so good. “How long have you been here?” he asked me.

  “Over two hours,” I replied.

A popular hip-hop song came on.

  “Wanna dance?” he said.

“Sure! This is one of my favorite songs,” I said.

“Then c’mon, baby!” he said, and then took my hand.

I laughed as he led me out to the floor as Ava and Marc followed us.

We got to the middle of the floor and were dancing close as we faced each other. I was facing Ava as she continued to smile big as she and Marc were dancing all over each other. I knew they had an attraction to each another, but like me when I was secretly seeing John, they didn’t wanna be a couple.

“Damn, you look so hot tonight!
 Brad said as we danced.

“Sexy enough for you?” I asked with a smile.

“Fuck yeah, it is!” he said with a laugh. He came behind me and started holding me. “I will take you right now on this floor if I could,” he whispered in my ear.

“I would love that!” I said as I laughed, “I’ve never had sex on a dance floor!”

He laughed as he held me tighter. “Neither have I! Damn, you have one of the nicest bodies I’ve ever seen. There is no girl at this club that can come close to looking as good as you.”

“Awww, aren’t you sweet! And hands down you are by far the hottest guy in here or anywhere! You should’ve seen all the girls looking at you like you were a movie star when you walked in here because you sure as hell look like one!”

He laughed as he blushed. “Thanks, baby, but I was only looking for you.”

I bent down in front of him from behind and started bouncing my butt up and down on him as he held on to my hips. I looked back up at him. “This is as close as we’ll get to having sex on the dance floor!” I said as I laughed.

He held on to my hips. “Damn, baby! I’m hard as a motherfuck! These dick-teasing dances that y’all do to us can only go so far!”

I laughed as I continued please-teasing him by doing these dances. Ava and I invented please-teasing by defining it as pleasing a guy who’s thirsty for some naughtiness by arousing him with doing certain dances and/or saying things that teases that special spot of theirs, but never actually having sex with them.

“Yeah, V.! Please-teasing rules!” Ava said, and then started doing the same thing to Marc that I was doing to Brad.

“Not in my book! Y’all need to stop this shit for real!” Marc said with a grin, as he held on to Ava’s hips as she bounced her butt up and down on him. “If y’all don’t stop this shit, y’all gonna look down to find your jeans and panties down by your ankles!”

“Who are you tellin’, man?!” Brad said with a laugh.

“Well, for me, it’ll just be my jeans!” Ava said with a laugh.

“Ava!” I said as I laughed.
