She gave him a tentative smile. “And just where will you be during this time?”
“I’ll be at Quantico, teaching classes at the Academy. I may even get to teach you a thing or two. And then, on weekends, I’d like to be in whatever city you’re assigned to.”
Abby’s heart started to pound. She took a step toward him. “This is never going to work, you know.”
“Probably not.”
“We’re too different.”
“I’m too old for you.”
She was only inches from him now. Abby felt her breath catch at his nearness. “I told you once that I’d be the judge of that.”
“Right. But you never gave me the verdict.”
Her brows lifted slightly. “I thought my actions that night spoke louder than words.”
A memory passed between them. A moment of heat. Then tenderness.
After a while, Sam said softly, “Someday, I’d like to tell you about Jonathan.”
“I’d love to hear about him.”
Sam pulled her into his arms and rested his chin on her head. “He loved baseball.”
“Did he?”
“And pizza. And German Shepherds. He was a great kid, Abby.”
She closed her eyes. “I’m sure he was. Especially if he was anything like his father.”
Sam’s arms tightened around her, and Abby confessed a little breathlessly, “I think I’m falling in love with you, Sam.”
He gave a wry chuckle. “That’s good. Because I think I fell for you the moment I first laid eyes on you.”
