“You’re not ready for a woman yet, Pat,” Joseph told him. “I’ll find you one soon though. If you find one before hand, I won’t stop you. You just learn from me, and you’ll be rewarded.”
“You won’t do anything to me, will you?” Patrick asked.
“No, I’m not like that,” Joseph told him. “Your father is holding you back. You can be a good soldier if you wanted to be. You can have the world now, and I can help you get it.”
“What about my father?” Patrick asked. “Why can’t he join us?”
“He’s weak,” Joseph said. “He doesn’t see why we did what we had to do. His captain will be the death of all of them.”
“I’m not weak,” Patrick said. “I’ll do whatever I have to do to survive. You said you’ll teach me right?”
“Absolutely,” Joseph said. “The doctor was right about one thing. We cannot take on those people in Detroit head on. They are too strong now, too organized. We have to take on smaller targets. We have to gather our supplies. I think we need to take out Traverse City.”
“They are disgusting people,” Patrick said. “I don’t mind killing them.”
‘There’s the hook,’ Joseph thought. ‘Once we’re done killing those people in Traverse City, that will be the line, and him meeting his father after that will be the sinker. By then, he won’t care if he kills the man or not.’
“That they are, Pat. That they are.”
