  His father, who had been listening to him carefully, said, “It’s amazing what money and prestige can make some people do.”

  “That’s true. In this case, two oversized ambitions came together; two monsters who cared for nothing but their own personal success colluded.”

  “Well, that didn’t work out for them,” concluded Anne-Catherine. “The first guy did himself in, the other guy will no doubt be in jail for a long time.”

  At that moment, the doorbell rang. Boizot jumped up: “It’s Sylvie! I’ll get it!”

  When he saw her standing there smiling in her white dress, he immediately forgot the events of the past weeks and could think of nothing but the hours to come and the night that would follow.
